Operating Systems and Porting / Re: [NEWS] Fedora 34 is out!
« on: September 03, 2021, 05:39:43 am »
Guys I inform you that with the help of Dan from the Fedora Project, whom I thank again, I was able to solve the problem of the audio bug on Fedora 34 that prevented me from turning up the volume.  The problem is what I had suspected for some time, the new Pipewire audio management software, which causes this nasty bug for those who use a dedicated internal sound card.  I performed the little procedure on the Fedora Wiki which makes me reinstall Pulse audio and delete Pipewire and the system is back to working normally.  I already told Dan that he said that as soon as he got my feedback he would inform the Pipewire team.

Operating Systems and Porting / Re: [NEWS] linux kernel 5.14 is out
« on: August 31, 2021, 12:21:42 pm »
Another anomaly that I found during the loading of the operating system and therefore of the various parts of the kernel before login is a prolonged time in loading this part that you see in the picture, which apparently concerns the loading of the swap partition. It takes an abnormal and prolonged time to initialize the partition, in addition to what you see in the picture, in reality it has even reached over 2 minutes, which it has never done on the other kernels until 5.13.13, which by the way I have just compiled and installed correctly to check if the problem had already arisen during the last relase of 5.13 or if they are all problems concerning 5.14. Well, in both cases these are problems related to the new Kernel 5.14.0 so beware of those who go to try it because they could run into my own problems ...

Operating Systems and Porting / Re: [NEWS] linux kernel 5.14 is out
« on: August 31, 2021, 04:06:54 am »
Friends of the community Power good morning everyone, I wanted to do the first installation test of Kernel 5.14 and I did it on Ubuntu as I usually do lately as I use this Distro more and then I am better off with the universal compilation procedure that I can carry out with him or with Debian. Well this time unfortunately it seems that something is wrong because the 5.14 kernel does not boot. The procedure I carry out is always the same and I do not touch anything of the parameters except the usual ones of the processor, some driver module that I know is not needed and the size of the pages. I also thought that the page size had returned to 64K but that's not the problem. When he finishes loading everything he no longer switches the video output to the graphics card. I thought it was a manual switching problem as well but nothing even that is not. So apparently in its first incarnation, Kernel 5.14 doesn't work or at least it doesn't work for me with the Navi 10. I don't know at this point if they again did something that broke the driver and now it doesn't work anymore ... I hope not...

Firmware / Re: HostBoot VS CoreBoot
« on: August 31, 2021, 03:57:16 am »
Hi Pietrushnic, of nothing, I have seen the excellent work done up to here and I have tried to highlight it. Surely there is room for improvement and stabilization of the whole but for the future I think it is an excellent alternative to HostBoot. Instead, what I would like to understand better is: the first start that shows the video, what we see in this case on the monitor, is really what you do when you turn on the system from the power supply and start the led sequences of the BMC ? Because that as we know is another of the current weaknesses of our machines. Being that they have to start the BMC first, it takes some time to put the computer in the condition to be able to turn on ... I would like to understand if what I see on the video as the first start corresponds to what we normally see only through the LEDs ...

Firmware / HostBoot VS CoreBoot
« on: August 30, 2021, 08:14:59 am »
Power Community Hello everyone, connecting to the HostBoot / CoreBoot speech just started thanks to our new member and friend Pietrushnic, I wanted to start analyzing more concretely what it is about. I'll post some links where you can clearly see the net difference in startup between the classic BMC startup in HostBoot mode and the same then, in the new CoreBoot mode. You can clearly see the marked difference of the two starts and I must say that the conditions for this new type of firmware in CoreBoot are really good. We know how slow BMC is currently booting into HostBoot mode, we have been talking about it for some time if I remember correctly, about how to speed up this boot a bit. Well, a possible solution is given by those of 3mdeb, with their new firmware written in CoreBoot that from what you see in the videos, from a nice acceleration to everything ...

https://github.com/3mdeb/openpower-coreboot-docs/blob/681ecad510d66a1f2e5cced06596c1cd10f3855b/devnotes/user_perspective.md

You can see that in the test, entering the Talos BMC with a second computer in this case, a test is performed with HostBoot boot which is the current one we use and then a boot in CoreBoot which is what 3mdeb is working on ... The improvement it seems remarkable to me ...

Dear friends and colleagues of the Power community good afternoon,
I follow what was written by the new friend of the Pietrusnico forum, to whom I warmly welcome among us, to tell you that I am collaborating with him and his company 3MDEB, to test and see how it behaves, the CoreBoot firmware they are already working on for some time he and his entire company 3MDEB. It seems that from the first impressions and the first information I have, the new firmware in CoreBoot boots much faster than the standard one, so the development looks very interesting for the future of OpenPower and our beloved architecture. As soon as I have more specific tests I will update you below and I will try to post my first impressions ... I also wanted to take the opportunity to tell the friend ClassicHas of Talospace, to contact Pietrusnico as soon as possible, because he needs to talk to him about the possibility of putting various information on this project, also on Talospace ...

Stay tuned for various updates on this new CoreBoot firmware ...!

Hi TLE, but where are the sources to compile Chromium 88 to 92 currently located?  Thank you

Applications and Porting / Re: MAME for Power
« on: August 08, 2021, 10:42:48 am »
From what I have seen, the problem exists on Fedora, mainly because it takes the famous dependencies as often happens when you use Fedora. I also found a version 0.190 or 193 now I don't remember well, which still worked on Fedora. I tried to install it and I was also successful but then he asked me about the dependencies that I tried to look for but that I did not find. Probably I was wrong to look for the source, but being that few use MAME on Power, no one has been able to tell me exactly where to get them. I had also tried to compile but it gave me that error that also on the GITLAB site is mentioned and shown so I abandoned the idea on Fedora. When I managed to get Ubuntu running smoothly on Power, I solved this problem and now I regularly use MAME on Powerm too, a bit like Daniel does on Void.In any case the main problem is the dependencies and then the fact that there is no recent version on Fedora as they have problems compiling at the moment. Maybe they will do something about Fedora 35 to correct this problem but we don't know anything yet ...

Yes MPC in fact when I tried to install this version of OpenSuse, then I tried to find all the dependencies but unfortunately I couldn't, I have no idea where to get them honestly. I solved inveve with Ubuntu, which has version 0.220 already nice and ready in the software store and doesn't need any dependencies.

Hi TLE, I thought that being files with RPM extensions, they were also usable on Fedora but obviously this is not the case. In the end I was unable to use it on Fedora but as I wrote in the previous post, now I use it successfully on Ubuntu which is regularly available and does not need any particular dependencies to install ... Thanks anyway!

General Discussion / Re: AMD RX 6900 XT from Sapphire NITRO

Guys where are we with AMD's new 6000 series cards on Power? Has anyone been able to get them to work properly yet? Drivers should have taken a step further to date than when TLE initiated this discussion ...

Hello TLE friend, of course I am very interested in doing it, then having a teacher like you is an honor for me! I tried to compile Chromium 87 myself, when you published the sources and the procedure I managed without problems, if the procedure is always the same I have no problems doing it, the problem is that I don't know where to find the sources of the other versions like 88 or 89 etc etc ... If I found the sources I think I would have no problem compiling, always repeat, the procedure is always the same otherwise you should just teach me the new one ... free yourself for the next version ... :)

Operating Systems and Porting / Re: Fedora 33 LTS 5.10.x kernel RPMs
« on: July 26, 2021, 08:42:42 am »
Yes, I'm not excited for a working version, I just wanted to share this discovery with you because apparently the behavior of these Kernels varies depending on the GPU used and so I thought I'd let you know that at the moment also on Navi 10, the Kernel official Fedora works in version 5.13.4 which in any case is a good thing because at least now we can also count on a recent Kernel that remains for the future. I'll try as they update to see what happens in the next versions. In any case I wanted to use the Kernel compiled by me but unfortunately that I wrote in the dedicated post, version 5.13 I can't compile it because it gives me an error and I don't understand the reason why those errors ...
