Operating Systems and Porting / Re: Trying out Chimera Linux
« on: October 31, 2022, 03:12:45 am »
Good news, what about navigation browsers?  Can Firefox and Chromium run like on Debian?

I tried looking for this CONFIG_SUSPEND option you told me about but I couldn't find it in the various entries while compiling the new 6.0.1 Kernel. Under which menu is this item located? Thank you

Good evening to the whole Power community, as you have known for some time now, I like to install and test the first stable version of every new Linux Kernel that comes out and now it's time to test version 6 that makes a generational change like you you all know well. I must say that being a version with more changes, I thought it might have some bugs but luckily it seems that everything is going well ... Let's see over the next few days how it behaves but if as they say, good morning sees from morning...

Firmware / Re: Messing with WOF Tables

Possibly indeed your problem seems to stem from the fact that currently this Power9 model is not in the list of those directly supported by Raptor. In fact I did not know this particular 16 core model, I remembered that there is a 12 core model and then the classic 18 and 22 but I did not know anything about this 16. You can try to ask Raptor in any case if you still have problems, possibly they can tell you what you need to correct to make it work fully.

I also confirm what MPC and Classic said, when I was using Fedora, I had configured Thunderbird as a mail client and it worked perfectly. The problem is limited to the Debian and derived versions ...

81
The Thunderbird problem was one of those that I denounced some time ago when I started using Ubuntu and I think the problem is the same as Ubuntu is a derivative of Debian. There is a bug that has never been solved despite the new versions, a bit like it happens on Firefox always on Ubuntu and its perennial problems never solved in an official way. Firefox on Debian works well I confirm everything, Thunderbird on Debian I never installed it because I prefer to use Evolutions which is by default as well and with which I have always found myself well but that problem I remember perfectly on Ubuntu.

At this point I can try to disable CONFIG_SUSPEND as you tell me in the next Kernel compilation I will do. Let's see if it stops making this strange flaw ... Thanks, I update the post as soon as I compile the next Kernel which will be the new stable 6.0 that I will try as usual as soon as it is available.

Just today I accidentally hit a key dedicated to sleep on my keyboard and in fact it made the problem of going to sleep and then it never recovered, forcing me to restart everything. I gave that command you reported and in fact the result is: mauriziop9 @ debian: ~ $ sudo systemctl status sleep.target
[sudo] mauriziop9 password:
● sleep.target - Sleep
      Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/sleep.target; static)
      Active: inactive (dead)
        Docs: man: systemd.special (7)

Hi Daniel, I remember this happening to me when I was using Ubuntu in version 20.04. If I left the computer for a while without using it, it would go to sleep with a black screen but when I tried to restore it from that state, the computer never recovered and crashed completely and you had to restart it. On Debian it never happened to me to be honest, I thought at the time that it was one of the many small Ubuntu bugs on Power but on Debian honestly I never tried to make it go to stand-by and then resume it ...

Operating Systems and Porting / Re: [NEWS] Debian 11 is out
« on: September 12, 2022, 04:41:43 pm »
Great job, you can also try Gnome, since Debian has been updated to version 11, Gnome has improved a lot as a graphical environment and has gone from the old 3.30 to my second best version which is 3.38. I don't know how you manage to make the graphics card work with the default kernel or 5.10.x. To run Radeons correctly on that version of Kernel, you need the page size in 4k and by default the Kernels on Power all have 64K. They fixed this bug only later in the Kernel even though I don't remember exactly from that version right now ...

Talos II / Re: mixing memory sizes on the same CPU?

I don't know if this can give you an answer to your question but I personally have a blackbird with 24 GB of which one bank is 16 and the other is 8 and Raptor herself told me that I could do it without any problem. I can't tell you, however, that the performance changes, I use it regularly with all 24 GB and it has never given me problems, I just don't remember exactly which slot I put the 16 on and on which the 8 unfortunately ...

Hi TLE friend, yes I saw that you talked about it in the new thread dedicated to Fedora. I confirm what was said at the beginning that is that 5.19.1 goes perfect and without problems, we hope that with the new version 6 there will be no new problems, but if it should happen, I will immediately make sure to promptly report any bugs to all of you to search to remedy immediately. For version 5.17.X a great job has been done so that it has been fixed definitively in subsequent versions. As usual, as soon as the first stable version comes out, I will immediately try the compilation and installation to test and see how it goes ...

So they finally started fixing the big problem Fedora suffers with Gnome from version 40 onwards I'm glad ... Only now maybe there is a version of Chromium missing that updates regularly like Debian-based distros ...

Greetings to the whole Power community, I thought that in order not to always create new discussions about each Kernel that comes out, make a single discussion that can contain all the main news and problems of the new Kernels on Power. I start immediately with the first test on the new 5.19.1 Kernel just installed and which seems to work without any kind of problem.

Dear friends of the Power community, I take up this treed to address especially the new arrivals. When you sign up for the forum, try to put some more information such as your country of origin. This can help you integrate better into the community and find any users from the same country with whom to exchange information and much more which I think is not bad indeed it can be an advantage ...! So please do not be shy, we are here on purpose to always improve the integration and development of the Power world!
