So guys, they discovered that actually Nvidia is still the same Nvidia ... Basically they made a sneaky move which is to remove the binary files from the "propietary BLOB" in the kernel and put them in the firmware of the GPU ...! The discovery was made by a certain Hector Martin, famous in the Linux environment above all! So in reality they have not made anything open that can be seen and pissed off by those who can do it, they have just moved it and so everyone is saying wow Nvidia has finally made its drivers open ... Bullshit!
Having said that I don't know what good we at Power will be able to take, it seems that even the optimization of everything will not be a great thing and therefore I have the distinct impression that in the end it will always be better for us to stay on AMD ...

Have you tried with version 87?  83 is now too old I think ... And then I go back to my same previous question, haven't they released any of the new versions in RPM package for Fedora?  The 8X series are too old versions now ...

The problem of Kernel 5.17 as well as 5.16, we know that you have to apply the patch, how can you apply it without compiling a kernel yourself ?!  Can it be applied to the Fedora Kernel?  Apart from that now I'm happy to use Debian with which I'm getting much better on everything.

Yes matgraf I confirm that I am no longer using that setting and the kernel starts regularly, I thought you had experienced it too but in any case here we are here to help each other and give us information so I'm happy that the information you be served! Even on Ubuntu it starts without that line, you don't need it anymore! Now we hope that as soon as possible the official Kernel team will serialize your fix patch on all future Kernels so we won't even have to boot it on every new kernel to be compiled.

Guys I also wanted to point out 2 other things about this new Kernel 5.17, the first is that Debian now loads with a few seconds less and it was already fast on its own, so in practice I gained a few seconds of loading speed and then I don't have needed to make that famous setting amdgpu.asm = 0. Not if this thing is always due to the patch of his friend matgraf or if it is something that they have solved with the new kernel, the fact is that it is no longer needed.

Guys I tried to update Ubuntu 21.10 with the new version 22.04 because now I've been keeping Ubuntu installed on a hardisk for some time and I like to try the news and see how it goes. What I can essentially say are 2 things, the first is that from the point of view of the general management of the operating system, Ubuntu confirms itself as the best there is currently on Power. The fluidity in moving the various pages and the whole Gnome 42 is truly fabulous, better than 21.10 which still had some uncertainty while still being overall good and well usable. So while fedora gets worse and worse and you are forced to manually install optimizations, Ubuntu is getting better and better and currently has the best handling of Gnome 4X that there is on Power. The second thing I noticed is that the more it evolves graphically and in general management, the more it regresses in terms of software in general. Let me explain better, his damned criticisms increase more and more! All this is incredible and it gets on a lot of nerves honestly because it's a shame to see a distro that is so good on a technical level and then gets totally lost in use. In the meantime, the first thing that catches the eye is that Firefox, which was already suffering from big perennial problems, of which I have spoken to you several times, as if by magic it totally disappears and you never see it again ... It has disappeared from me. pure Grub Customizer which I used to manage the 5.15.X Kernel booting. I tried to insert the Raptor repositories for Chromium and once I save, if I try to reopen the software & update to insert the key, the application doesn't open anymore and I have to remove the Raptor repositories ... I didn't go further because 'already' I was nervous enough and I gave up from continuing to try but probably if I continue I also find other criticisms that have always been present on this distro on Power and have never been resolved. So I wonder how it is possible that still no one tests this distro to try to fix all these criticisms that have always afflicted him, crazy, I'm speechless ...

Hi matgraf, yes I just finished compiling and installing on Debian too. Everything was fine on Debian as well as you can see in the picture. I also used make bindeb-pkg after make menuconfig. After he created the files with extension .deb, I gave the command to have all 4 installed then I ran dpkg -i linux - *. Deb and he installed the generated .deb files and then automatically updated the grub. Right now I'm writing from Debian with Kernel 5.17.4. Great job thanks matgraf!

No matgraf, as not mentioned, I only understood afterwards what you meant in your explanation and how to insert the patch. Just up and running in version 5.17.4, your patch apparently works very well, congratulations. I'm testing it on Ubuntu, then compiling it for Debian. Thanks

Hi MatGraf, unfortunately, having never patched the kernel, I'm not practical and I don't understand where to apply this patch exactly. I read in this guide on the net, which must be applied in the path of / usr / src but in the downloaded kernel there is only the usr directory, the src is not there and I don't understand where to apply this patch. That path is present in the root system directory, that is the one that is identified with the symbol / but in the directory of the Kernel just downloaded I can't find this path ... So you think it's AMD's fault that these cards still don't go to Power? I thought that since AMD's drivers are always open source, then the Power developers came up with the equivalents for our architecture. At the time of my 5700 I remember that when the first drivers for Linux were published, Raptor in the person of Tim Pearson, created a Patch to insert nice Kernel and from that moment on this card started to work also on Power. Then as time passed, everything was integrated into the official kernels and the 5700 as well as the 5500 Navi 14 ran perfectly on Power. Now I don't know if even in this case, a Patch would be needed to make these cards work at first, or in this case the problems are other too ... You should ask whoever does this work on AMD GPU drivers. ..

Great Matgraf, great job, how can we take advantage of the correction now? Should we simply wait for the Linux Kernel team to fix it and then regularly download the tarball from the linux-archive site or do we need to do something else? Thanks
