Blackbird / Re: Support for POWER9 22core?
« on: February 16, 2020, 07:04:33 pm »
I wouldn't. At best you'll have an expensive chip that won't achieve full throughput; at worst the power draw might blow something. You really need the T2 Lite or full T2 for that.

What's better about it as compared to, say, DarkPlaces? (I use that and ioquake3 to get my id fix.)

3U/4U seems kind of big, yes. If you have that much airflow then you might be okay.

Yes, but I don't know if that mapping applies for the T2. IPMI reports six fans on this machine. I haven't sat down to figure out which are which.

Incidentally, what is the CPU monitor tool you're using there? I like the clockspeed display.

Oh, my bad. Yes, it does need to be writeable to send the commands to the BMC. Try 0660 instead of 0640. I wasn't thinking there.

What does ls -l /dev/ipmi0 look like? On this system,

Code: [Select]
% ls -l /dev/ipmi0
crw-rw----. 1 root ipmi 239, 0 Feb  5 09:05 /dev/ipmi0

I think you have the groups right, but either your udev rule is wrong or it hasn't taken effect yet.

I should think any EATX rack case would work. For the 8-core, though, I'd wonder if the HSFs would do better than the plain heatsinks. If you're putting it into a cramped rack, these systems don't run particularly hot but heat could be an issue.

Fortunately, power is the least of your worries. 15A is plenty for that configuration.

Where did you see that? I don't see that on their web page or their Tw*tt*r feed.

Well, that didn't take too long, even though I've been on duty all weekend.

I'm aware of IPMItool. Would be nice to have a GNOME shell that uses IPMItool.

Sounds like I have a project for the weekend ...

Yeah, it's just the video card. Same for the Blackbird (that was done on this T2).

This message, at least, looks innocuous.

From a filesystem perspective I don't really see a problem with yanking the power at the Petitboot menu, since nothing's really mounted in such a way that could get damaged. I don't know if this would do anything to the BMC but I doubt it.
