Blackbird / Re: Question about firmware flash switches
« on: January 28, 2023, 11:24:52 pm »
Looking at the schematic, moving the switch towards 1 disables write protection (allows writing).
The pin is disconnecting from BMC control and pulled high by resistor; 1(off) 2(on)

The film (kapton tape) is there to protect the switch when it's being soldered to the motherboard add to allow a machine to pick up the part and place it on the motherboard.

I think it's still a pretty big risk to try and use it.
With that big of a solder splash, there could be other smaller and harder to see ones anywhere else on the motherboard.
Or even loose solder balls rolling around waiting to short out some pins.

Maybe petiboot isn't loading the USBHID driver? I've been able to directly login to the bootloader.
IIRC, hvc0 is for connecting a terminal to the Rs232 serial port.

What BMC version do you have? did you see this in the quick start...?

Please note that older releases of BMC firmware had an issue where the IP could not be set. If you run the commands listed below but the IP information does not change (and you cannot work with the factory defaults), upgrade your BMC as explained in https://wiki.raptorcs.com/wiki/Talos_II/Firmware.

The TalosII schematic shows pin26 F20 of the BMC to be an input, SYS_PWROK_BUF, from the FPGA.

Looks like the BMC is failing to setup an IO pin.
Just a guess but maybe there's short at a button, connector, or the pins on BMC IC.

Looks like the different flavors are options within the same install media (don't have their own ISO's). I got it working now.

I had two SAS drives plugged in which the installer doesn't seem to like if they're both plugged in, for some reason.
Maybe because the RAID or ESXI setup they had before?

I want to try out different distro's since I haven't used Linux enough to really form an opinion on Gnome or the others.

Did you use the network install ISO?
I'm having issue's with the other two ISO options, they give an error when the installer just starts, preventing going any farther.
I haven't connected my Talos II to the internet yet, but maybe that's what I need to do.

Has anyone tried this out yet?

Talos II / Re: OpenBMC password

That's for changing a password when you're already able to login, but I meant for recovering access and resetting a lost password.

It was a lowercase L.
For some reason I thought it was an uppercase L or maybe a '1' or 'I'. The 'one' is very similar.

I'm still curious on how logging into the serial console is suppose to allow you to reset the password though. I don't see any OpenBMC documentation about it. I found this: https://docs.graphcore.ai/projects/bmc-user-guide/en/latest/serial-rescue.html ...but is it specific to graphcore processors or generic to OpenBMC?

Yeah, I've tried different variation for the characters that look ambiguous, but still no luck logging in.

Talos II / OpenBMC password
« on: March 13, 2022, 03:13:09 am »
I'm trying to log in to the BMC on my new Talos II with the password that came in the box, but it doesn't work.

Are there instructions somewhere on setting/resetting the password? I've connected to the serial console port but don't see any obvious way in u-boot to do that.
