Operating Systems and Porting / Re: [NEWS] Fedora 38 is finally out!

I have a silly recurring bug that's been in place since my original install of Fedora 37: periodically xscreensaver clears its power management settings and I'll need to re-enable them. There hasn't been much rhyme or reason - every two weeks to a month, it happens out of the blue.

Which DE are you using?

Always liked CDE, but that's probably from my greybeard days in the '90s.

I don't mind using CDE at all if the ecosystem around Motif is still active. It is quite hard to find motif-based apps and other UI toolkits look alien or not working correctly at all.

Applications and Porting / [MISC] CDE 2.5.1 on Fedora 39
« on: July 27, 2023, 07:13:49 am »
I am happy to report that CDE 2.5.1 can be compiled on Fedora 39 (rawhide as of now) successfully.

Here is how:

Code: [Select]
# get the cde-2.5.1.tar.gz from SourceForge
tar xzvf cde-2.5.1.tar.gz

sudo dnf group install c-development development-tools
sudo dnf install pam-devel libutempter-devel libXp-devel libXt-devel libXmu-devel libXft-devel libXinerama-devel libXpm-devel \
motif motif-devel libXaw-devel libX11-devel libXScrnSaver libtirpc-devel xset sessreg xrdb \
libjpeg-turbo-devel freetype-devel openssl-devel tcl-devel ksh m4 ncompress patch \
rpcbind bison xorg-x11-xbitmaps xorg-x11-proto-devel flex opensp libXrender-devel \
xorg-x11-fonts-100dpi rpcgen bdftopcf libXdmcp-devel
cd cde-2.5.1
./configure
make -j32
sudo make install
sudo service rpcbind start
sudo cp contrib/desktopentry/cde.desktop /usr/share/xsessions/
# verify with
rpcinfo -p
# log out from GNOME shell and back to GDM, choose CDE to start the session

Pretty happy with this distro so far.

The most recent update to kernel 6.4.0 is smooth. No bugs that I could pick up.

The only wish I have is more optimisation to mutter and GNOME shell. We have been there before, it is likely GNOME 45 might polish all rough edges before the release of Fedora 39

Probably it makes more senses to use it in conjunction with Artic Term Kit board.

I just wish the board is more affordable.

It's been awhile since I heard someone mention "bangBMC".

From what I could see there has been activity in https://gitlab.raptorengineering.com/bangbmc-firmware/br-bangbmc. I am too curious whether this initiative has picked up traction and if it is worthy enough to replace OpenBMC

This distro is definitely on my radar. Once it has reached beta, I am going to go all in.

I don't think there are problems with AMD GPU, the Kernel loads regularly, unfortunately in my case that I use Debian 12, I don't know why, as I also wrote on the other discussion relating to Kernels, from versions 6.2.X Debian 12 doesn't work, not even with their own 6.3.0. Everything loads regularly but when it has to boot from the classic black screen before arriving at the login screen, it always remains in the black screen and you have to restart... But I repeat in this case I think it's only a Debian 12 problem, with Debian 11 itself not happens...

As long as the amdgpu module is loaded correctly (check `dmesg`), it is very likely related to other components in Debian not the kernel

I have not tried it out yet. I hope it does not break the amdgpu.

AFAIK there ain't much changes related to PowerISA
