Applications and Porting / Re: Better VGA in QEMU/KVM-HV/pSeries?

Do I get it right, that nobody here uses QEMU-KVM on Power9 with better resolution than 800x600?

However I do not think 5.16 is that much different to 5.14 because there aren't major change that benefits PPC.

There should be support from 5.16 for KVM on Book3e PowerPC CPUs derived from e6500 like the T2080 in the future PowerPC notebook and current T2080 dev boards. That is no benefit for us (= POWER9 users), but certainly quite a step for people on other current PPC64 machines as there in fact are just the two groups - big-iron-derived POWER9 and embedded Book3e CPUs.

Applications and Porting / Better VGA in QEMU/KVM-HV/pSeries?
« on: January 11, 2022, 08:40:17 am »
Hello,

Inspired by the post from powerpc-notebook project, where they managed to bring KVM support into Linux kernel 5.16 for the Book3e NXP T2080 CPU, I tried to actually use the QEMU with KVM-HV on my Blackbird. It works well with the pseries machine type, I managed to install FreeBSD both ppc64 and ppc64le versions, but the problem is with the graphics. QEMU says that just std and virtio -vga values are supported and both types can do only 800x600, not more.

Does anyone use KVM-HV with better resolution and if so, then how?

Thanks.

Didn't Open Desktop Workstations have a Freescale sticker on them at one point?

OK, I had the taskset wrong, this problem is now gone. But there is something different: even though the KVM works (no errors when using it, the kvm_pr is loaded, etc.), it's painfully slow and I haven't been able to install the 10.5.8 update - it says that the package couldn't be verified after almost 14 hours of trying to do so. The package works on all my other machines, it's just the standard combo update from Apple. Any suggestions, what might be wrong this time?

(It almost seems that to get to my photos, it would be faster to export everything from my old iPhoto library to filesystem and abandon the app altogether. Or emulate an Intel Mac. But I hate to do either, it's 15 years of photos.)

To dig the thread a bit up: In Gentoo Linux, with kernel 5.4.80, the KVM-PR seems to be working. I was even able to install the Mac OS X in the accell=kvm mode, even though it was painfully slow. I will see how already installed system will perform...

Update: even though everything seems to be running, I still get occasional watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#13 stuck for 23s!

O.K., I installed Gentoo ppc4le from RiscySlack, here is how it went: http://vivapowerpc.eu/20210208-1330_Gentoo_installation_on_ppc64le

I decided to try Gentoo on my Blackbird. It's been more than a decade since I actually used system built from sources, I'm kind of waiting whether bw42 will ever discover, why I'm not able to build kernel on my RiscySlack install and I have spare SATA SSD as RiscySlack is installed on the NVMe, so why not?

I wonder, did anyone successfully tried Gentoo?

And how did you install? I quicky discovered that it's not possible to install from the PPC64 ISO, because it's BE and if you want to have the system in LE, you will fail to chroot after installing the stage3 - /bin/bash is in incompatible format  :)

I'll try to do everything up to the chroot from RiscySlack, but I assume, that this can't be what Gentoo authors had in mind. Am I missing something?

Applications and Porting / QEMU accel=kvm not able to boot guest Mac OS X
« on: January 16, 2021, 06:09:26 am »
Hello everyone!

I wonder if anyone else ever had the same problem as I do: I'm not able to boot any Mac OS X version with KVM accelerator enabled.
More details:

Machine: 8-core Blackbird, 32G RAM
Kernel&host OS: right now 5.10.6 under Riscy Slack, but before that whatever was current in Void Linux during last months, kvm and kvm_pr both present and loaded
QEMU: 5.2.0, but also 4.1.1 and 5.0.0
Mac OS X: 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, 10.5.2

What happens? MacOS X starts booting, after a while it reaches the point where it reports BSD root: disk0s3, major 14, minor 2 and hangs there. I discovered how to make qemu report errors, this is what happens:

The commandline is: taskset -a -c 0-3 ./qemu-system-ppc -cpu nitro -M mac99,accel=kvm,via=pmu -m 512 -prom-env boot-args=-v -boot c -drive file=leopard.img,format=qcow2,l2-cache-size=4M -usb -device usb-tablet -g 1280x1024x32  -d unimp,guest_errors

The tcg accelerator works, I installed the system from DVD through it as with KVM not even that boots. Thanks for any advice!

I will write about it more in detail on vivaPowerPC, but I decided to put things I slackbuild for my machine on the server for others. I try to mimick well known structure of Alien's SlackBuilds as much as possible.
There are only few packages there, well I just started, SlackBuild scripts have the ppc64le section added and if possible I try to build from as fresh versions as possible. The source package used to build is also in the build folder.
I'm adding single line with my contact to every SlackBuild script, so people can send curses directly to me and not to the original maintainer.

If anyone of you is brave enough: http://vivapowerpc.eu/software/SlackBuilds/

Wonderful! So the fastest and most convenient way to check for missing libraries will for me be downloading new ISO and reinstalling, since I didn't do much in the fresh install yesterday. Again, thanks for all the slacks!

The iso was from January 4th, I still have it somewhere on my drive if needed for examination.

Finally managed to get decent 1TB NVMe instead of my ancient 64 GB SATA SSD and therefor I tried my favorite distro, which in fact I use on all my other (x86, x64 and ARM) computers. Everything was smooth, no surprise during the install, Riscy Slackware boots on my 8C Blackbird like a marvel ...

... but then one surprise emerged: It seems that the content of http://mirror.riscyslack.org/RiscySlack/riscyslack64-current/slackware64/ is not the same what is on the current install ISO. To be precise some quite important libraries are missing on the ISO, like libXaw or libXMu, so I couldn't even start xterm. No big deal - downloading txz packages from mirror and installing them manually fixed this. But now I have to find out what else didn't install.

Is there any reason for this?

(Anyway: thanks for bringing my native distro to my native platform!)
