Power10 announcement from Raptor soon?
« on: October 02, 2023, 04:59:51 pm »
At least this is what Toshaan Bharvani said at EuroBSDcon2023 at 3:50 min.

I'll believe it when I see it.

As someone in the comments on the video pointed out, at 41:27, it's stated that Raptor "found a way". Apparently some part of the memory controller is open source, but I thought there were two areas of concern, the other being a PCIe controller?

Yeah. The blobs were on two spots. But can't remember where. Maybe ClassicHasClass?
But a price of $1500 would be excellent for a PowerISA 3.1 workstation. Availability, I guess mid 2024.

At this point only someone from Raptor can answer directly, at least to know if this thing is real or means something completely different...

Well, as long as there's a Blackbird 2 I'm excited.

I am pretty stoked to hear of the great news. I'd love to see:

* PCIe 5 support
* NVMe built-in slots
* at least 2 USB C ports
* Power Management (proper Hibernation)
Faithful Linux enthusiast

My Raptor Blackbird

If the price can be achieved I am thrilled.
It seems like IBM / OpenPOWER are starting to get it finally.

It could be that IBM is willing to make a Power10 lite or something like that. Because it's called a "PowerISA 3.1" CPU.
Apart from "Raptor will announce a Power10 system".

ps/2 port is what I'd like.

Didn't the Raptor Computing Twitter indicate that a Power10 was a huge CPU that would necessitate a single socket EATX motherboard? I want a Blackbird II: Free Software Boogaloo as much as anyone, but am tempted to think the person delivering the info has mixed something up... maybe a LibreSOC design at its heart, say?

I think the fundamental point is only 1, I don't think there are many conjectures to make, if IBM releases all the firmware, then Raptor can think of making a Power 10 machine. Otherwise I think, we will hardly see it...

Raptor said minimum size for Power10 would be ATX. I'm fine with that.
He mentioned also LibreSOC as a SBC. Availability 2024.

Raptor is working with Solid Silicon on a new Power CPU. https://x.com/raptorcompsys/status/1715147706061168822
