Crackling sound with Kernel 5.6.x
« on: June 06, 2020, 10:45:07 am »
I have a problem with kernel 5.6 and sound output over a Navi RX 5500 GPU. It's a rustle/ distortion gets worse with echo. The whole thing disappears then becomes and then reappears. Sounds similar to speech-dispatcher being activated. But I have already deleted this one.

With kernel 5.4 this problem does not occur. Is the problem perhaps already known or how can I localize the problem?

dmesg output
Kernel 5.4: https://pastebin.com/H5F3VK3W
Kernel 5.6: https://pastebin.com/gnTv63NG

I can hear the system bus sometimes leak into my audio with my WX7100 (5.6 kernel). Is this something different or louder?

No. I think it's different. Two mp3s attached.

The quiet noise at the beginning comes from the recording. The slight crackling is like on an LP and the Bad.mp3 recording is totally distorted. Unfortunately I cannot reproduce it or provoke it. With Kernel 5.4 the sound is crystal clear.

Wow, that is pretty bad. I haven't encountered this myself, though (either with a USB sound dongle or with HDMI audio from the WX7100), so maybe it's something with amdgpu. What's your kernel command line?

Hi,

nothing special.
Code: [Select]
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rd.lvm.lv=fedora/root rd.lvm.lv=fedora/swap rhgb quiet"
See link to the Kernel 5.4 alsa-info.sh output and Kernel 5.6 alsa-info.sh output

The only difference that I noticed while flying over it was:
Kernel 5.4:
Code: [Select]
0 [Generic ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
                      HD-Audio Generic at 0x600c0000a0000 irq 22

Kernel 5.6:
Code: [Select]
0 [HDMI ]: HDA Intel - HDA ATI HDMI
HDA ATI HDMI at 0x600c0000a0000 irq 23

Can a difference in IRQ cause this problem?

My personal experience with the audio via HDMI of the Navi 10 GPU is negative from the beginning. When I did the test when I was able to use the modified 5.5 kernel that allowed to use the GPU audio, I remember that it was disturbed, I already speak from Fedora 31. Then I didn't try anymore because I don't care as I use the dedicated sound card in my case. But I thought the problem was in the audio management contained in the used drivers that we currently have available in the patch. With Kernel 5.4.0.2 I don't remember if I tried but in general I remember that the audio coming from the HDMI output of the Navi 10 was not good.

No, the quality is good. The only thing was that from time to time speech-dispatcher appears in the GNOME settings audio. Then the audio sounds similar to the Bad.mp3. After I removed the speech-dispatcher everything was fine.

I can do a test now with both Kernel 5.4 and 5.6 and I see if it differs from these as it is on Kernel 5.5

Wouldn't think so. If it really were the IRQ, I'd expect it simply not to work at all.

Should I post this on the Fedora ML?

I used to have the same issue with my AMD Vega 64 card when I was on Kernel 5.4 (Fedora 32 Rawhide). The problem's gone away after upgrading to kernel 5.6.
