Hi everyone,

My machine stopped working yesterday and did nothing after hostboot stage. I tried re-flashing firmware (though bmcweb) but this didn't help. I spent most of the day yesterday trying to find out what could be wrong and was ready to disassemble the board for more controlled testing today.

This morning, I decided to try flashing pnor one more time, but using pflash in bmc ssh connection. Surprisingly this resolved the whole situation! So, pflash and upload firmware to web ui is definitely not the same thing.

Anyways, this got me thinking I need to prepare a bit better for when the flashchips eventually do need replacing and it would be nice to have a (pre-flashed) set on stock.

- what type of flash chips do i need?
- who sells these? (ships to NL, ideally preflashed)
- if flashing is needed by myself, what tooling do I need?

My hypothesis so far is that the thunderstorms a couple of days ago had something to do with the failure, but that's just a guess.

Glad I got the machine back into operation again, but still a bit concerned this can happen anytime again.

I'm not sure which board you have, but on the T2 the BMC and boot flashes are near the BMC serial header next to CPU2 slots 2 and 3. My T2 has an MXIC MX25L25635FMI-10G in the BMC socket and a Micron RW187 in the boot socket which is their shorthand for a MT25QL512ABB8ESF-0SIT. The Blackbird should use similar flash chips, if not the same.

[RESOLVED] Which type of flash chips for bmc/pnor and where to buy them?

Just to complete the story.

After 2 days the machine acted up again and this time I couldn't even flash the chip.

pflash gave: "Could not initialise architecture flash structures" and the pnor /dev/mtd6 was missing, so the chip seemed to be toast after all.

I ran on file-based PNOR flash while waiting for the delivery of new flash chips (digikey has them), which worked fine (apart from power cycles, then a manual re-upload of the image was needed again to boot)

I replaced the Micron RW187 PNOR flash chip today and reflashed, all problems gone.
