So it's out, what do we know about Gnome's performance?  I'm currently keeping Fedora at 37 because you pointed out that 38 was slow and ugly again... How does it look now with 39?  Thank you

I’d wait for the honorable ClassicHasClass to render his verdict over on Talospace before making the jump, as I did with 38.

Yes of course but our friend TLE is already perfectly informed on these things and I think that he can already give us this information as he has already done in the past on Fedora...

I might be a little delayed this time around since I'm working about 400 miles from home at the moment. Strange times, new day job, but gotta pay the bills.

Here you see, this time our friend Classic can't immediately give us his first impressions and so we're counting on TLE...

I'm on fedora 38 now and I'm not a fan of it, wish I could go back to opensuse so I hope 39 is a better experience.

EDIT: and i just tried to upgrade to 39 twice and it failed both times.

Godspeed - I've been through a number of job hops in the past decade. Here's hoping things settle into a stable rhythm for you soon.

also, since 38 (now on 39) My mouse skips and drops when I use it at 1000hz, this wasn't an issue on openSUSE leap or tumbleweed.

I am impressed with the optimisation of GNOME 45. Animation is no longer sluggish like that of 38. Other programs such as GNOME Calendar starts very quickly.

Highly recommended!

So they have solved the problem of Gnome's slow speed finally, let's just hope that this time they keep it in the next versions too.  Can't you tell us anything new about Chromium?  We still don't have a valid alternative to Firefox when needed unfortunately... On Debian I have both and they work perfectly because if one of the 2 doesn't work well there's the other and even if it's rare but it can happen...

It's been awhile and lots of patches no longer work out of the box. I was attempting to get chromium build for Fedora 39 but the page did not load correctly and I was so occupied with family and work that I could not find time to get to the bottom of fixing it.

I get it so you need more time to work on it.  I hope you can complete the work so you can also use Chromium which has now been running stable on Debian for a few years thanks to Raptor.

Today I finally found some free time and was tempted by Fedora 39. I did the installation in Qemu-7.0.0-15.fc37 on my Talos II. The whole process went through smoothly and took about 10 minutes. The problems only started when I tried to change the resolution. Gnome crashed and nothing could be done. I sent a PowerDown signal from Qemu. Fortunately, the kernel worked and the system shut down correctly. Re-logging in again crashed the system. Again PowerDown worked correctly. On the third try, I changed Wayland (the default) to X11 (my preferred) and Gnome no longer hung. It also allowed to change the resolution to a higher one, unfortunately the max was 1920x1080. I did the upgrade to the current versions of the packages, everything went without the slightest problems. In general, the system runs very smoothly, even the graphics mode in the virtual machine does not cause discomfort in use.

Updated yesterday from 37, I hadn't put 38 precisely because it was disgusting again and so I decided to wait and leave 37 which is fine instead. I confirm what my friend TLE said, everything is good and works well, the Gnome 45 works well and runs as smoothly as the version for Fedora 37 and therefore they have again optimized everything in the correct way. As for the graphics server, I must say that I also encountered some problems under Wayland. If I start under the latter, it sets the 4k resolution as default, i.e. 3840 x 2160 but if I want to change there is a big bug and it doesn't allow me to do so. So I went back to the x11 server as well which is still better today after a long time... I'm now waiting to see Chromium return to Fedora, let's see if it will be possible...
