I usually drop into skiroot by selecting Exit to shell option in Pettitboot menu then shutdown with `halt`command. Wondering if hard shutdown by disconnecting power source is just as good?

I am missing a "shutdown" menu item too ;-)
Have you already tried the "sudo shutdown now" command for clean shutdown?

From a filesystem perspective I don't really see a problem with yanking the power at the Petitboot menu, since nothing's really mounted in such a way that could get damaged. I don't know if this would do anything to the BMC but I doubt it.
