Blackbird / Re: Support for POWER9 22core?
« on: April 22, 2020, 11:12:31 am »
FYI, on the talos IRC is someone who is running a 18-core (190W) POWER9 on a Blackbird. And another one has overclocked a 8-core to 4.3GHz

Yeah, I got mixed up on that one. I thought LaGrange had the most PCIe lanes.

[I second that. Please also get rid of all SATA ports. SATA is now a thing of the past or replace SATA with SAS (but I do not think it would be a good idea because of cost factor).

I also think the board should come with at least two M2 port. One is for NVMe SSD and the other for Wifi.

Yes, but the problem is the limited PCIe lanes of the Sforza CPU. LaGrange has more, but is also more expensive for sure.

I wish that the future revision of Blackbird would swap position of X8 with X16 slot. Additionally the X8 slot should be open-ended so that X16 card could fit in perfectly without the needs of using adapter card.

Second that and remove the f***ing USB port ...

Great to hear. Do you know what was broken?

Operating Systems and Porting / Re: Possibility to install Amiga OS 4
« on: April 08, 2020, 10:37:52 am »
That would be great to have AmigaOS running on Blackbird! At the moment, I think that's only possible under emulation ... with qemu since the support of the Sam460 config seems to be good enough. I would like to try ... when I will have a Blackbird (not ordered yet and I don't know when it will happen).

Also AROS and MorphOS should work. They also supports 460ex boards.

Talos II / Re: Imprecise EATX terminology considered harmful - SSI-EEB

For E-ATX mainboards I would definitely go for a Dune Pro.

Someone has to go to this page: https://github.com/open-power/petitboot
And make a request about the desired features.

Tl;dr: E-ATX is a shithole. If I wasn't sure about the space in the chassis, I'd choose SSI-EEB.

This would also mean that any E-ATX chassis would be compatible with the TalosII. But this is not the case.
When you ask manufacturers (regarding E-ATX) if the case is 12" x 13" compatible, some say no. For example PHANTEKS Eclipse P300.
And as far as I know Supermicro's form factor for server boards is EE-ATX, which TalosII is also not.

That are great news for us and Raptor, too!

There are many less-popular specifications, from SAS to DisplayPort to IEEE-1394/FireWire/i.link that I find myself sympathetic to, where much of the opposition seems to be due to existing popularity/install-base. I only hope Power ISA’s future is more like DisplayPort than FireWire.

Oh yeah, I like IEEE1394 (in 2005 we produced FB6000 from Stryker, which was/is used for brain surgery. This board also used 1394b.) pretty much. Sadly, FW3200 never apeared in the mainstream. NuBus was also very cool back in that date.

User Zone / Re: Sound card enabling
« on: March 31, 2020, 12:44:48 pm »
Q: Why does Sound Blaster AE-9 not work under Linux?
A: Because it is not supported by ALSA.

This means if you select a sound card that is supported by ALSA, it will obviously work under Linux ...
