User Zone / Re: Rough edges and how I work around them (or not)
« on: March 05, 2024, 01:11:07 pm »
It seems like video encoding on Power9 has been a rough edge on the platform since the beginning... I know the VP9 encoder was getting some decent ppc64le optimizations several years back; did those ever get merged into trunk? Short of using a hardware-assisted encoder I don't even know what my options are that don't require encoding to 480p.

What are you referring to?

Good question. My personal life's been hectic lately; maybe I dreamed something.

What are the video hardware compatibility issues this fixes, out of curiosity?

GPU Compute / Accelerators / Re: Intel Arc Support in Kernel 6.8
« on: February 09, 2024, 05:50:57 pm »
I'm cautiously optimistic, I've been literally looking for an excuse to pick up an arc gpu as it'd be perfect for my blackbird. One question, why is the Huc microcontroller not likely to be supported and what limitations would there be on video encoders without it?

To my recollection that microcontroller won’t be supported from Battlemage/future IGPs, and the driver maintainers consider implementing support outside the x86-only i915 driver to be too pernicious to be worth bothering with. IIRC the microcontroller’s responsible for configuration of parameters to be passed to the video encoder, so outside of some default setting it won’t be configurable. Once kernel support for the Xe driver is verified working I’ll throw my little Arc A380 in and take it for a test drive.

GPU Compute / Accelerators / Intel Arc Support in Kernel 6.8
« on: January 24, 2024, 09:01:53 am »
It looks like Intel's Xe driver is being mainlined in kernel 6.8. To this point Arc support's been officially limited to the i915 driver, which has had hard x86 dependencies. However the driver is confirmed to compile and work on aarch64, so we may be in luck. While the driver is chiefly intended for the to-be-released Battlemage hardware it does support the current Alchemist line; the only thing we'll likely miss out on is support for the HuC microcontroller. Without that support the video encoder is rather less capable... but given a choice between AMD and Intel's open graphics software stack, I know which way I'm leaning. Let's hope for good things.

If you believe you've determined the cause, I don't see a reason to keep the error messages around for further investigation. Good work troubleshooting it.

Regarding OpenCL support on Radeons - is RustiCL support in and working for Fedora? And if so, how does one go about enabling it?

Operating Systems and Porting / Debian 12 status?
« on: December 13, 2023, 10:17:19 am »
I am debating jumping from Fedora to Debian on my Blackbird machine, which would coincide with a nice storage upgrade. I've had plenty of Debian/Ubuntu family experience on x86 so that part doesn't give me heartburn, but there are a few questions I'd like to have answered before I make the switch.

- Does the stock kernel for Bookworm work with RDNA2 Radeons? What should I do to prevent Debian from trying to use the BMC video versus my RX 6600? (IIRC it installs kernel 6.1 but I don't know what the current version they're providing is - I assume it'll Just Work, outside of possibly coaxing x.org to properly init the Radeon with a config file)
- Are there any snafus or gotchas beyond what MauryG5 has experienced in this thread?
- Is Chromium actually working and installable?

Talos II / Re: Talos II reboots itself

I have a power supply with a 10-year warranty ;) Thermaltake Toughpower TF1 1550W.

Then that likely isn't it, though don't dismiss it outright. Have you considered re-flashing the firmware as MPC7500 suggested?

Looks like it might be tied to this, though I couldn’t say what’s triggering it… In any case it looks like updating the firmware to 2.18+ could mitigate the issue. I'm running a Blackbird, so I can't really provide further insight on this one. But I hope it helps.

I might be a little delayed this time around since I'm working about 400 miles from home at the moment. Strange times, new day job, but gotta pay the bills.

Godspeed - I've been through a number of job hops in the past decade. Here's hoping things settle into a stable rhythm for you soon.

I’d wait for the honorable ClassicHasClass to render his verdict over on Talospace before making the jump, as I did with 38.

Sorry I didn't get back to you on this, I realized later than I should have that openXray apparently doesn't support the original STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl yet... so even if it compiled successfully it probably wouldn't run for me at this point. What a weird release.

General OpenPOWER Discussion / Re: POWER11 on the horizon?
« on: October 24, 2023, 03:31:18 pm »
If anything I'm most interested in is IBM returning to its core open source design, so that it has a Power 11 processor that's exactly as open as a Power 8 or Power 9, I'm not going to buy Power CPUs. that they are not IBM because their technology is the best ever for their processors and I don't think that any other company, no matter how good, can reach their level and therefore I don't intend to change companies for these microprocessors. IBM creates it and IBM must produce it or have it produced by one of its direct partners to be the best, this at least is my humble opinion and then obviously it is debatable by anyone.

I mean, if it makes you feel better it's all but certain that the Solid Silicon S1 is a Power10 with open components replacing the previous closed-source bits. There's not another explanation that makes sense within the timeline of their operation.

I'm fine with my eight core Power9. The only other desktop I'm plotting is a baseline Mac Studio for video editing and multimedia use.
