General Discussion / Re: The pride of being Power!
« on: March 13, 2020, 02:31:32 pm »
Dear friends of the Open Power community, seeing no participation I also tell you what reason prompted me to open this post. The excuse was that through Summit I could connect to the serious problem that now afflicts the whole world or Covid-19. Maybe I should have specified it better in the opening mass but I believed that it could be alone a way to connect to the Virus and thus be able to exchange information with you about the situation in different world countries since our community expands precisely in all parts of the globe. Since this is a general section of Power discussion, we can think of taking the opportunity to talk about this big problem. Here in Italy, as you know, I think all of you, a great epidemic broke out, we have become the second most infected country unfortunately and now we are in a really bad way. The government has had to enact a series of amendments which have unfortunately forced us and I rightly say so, not to leave the house any more except for necessities such as work, food, medical examinations and drugs. The climate is surreal, seeing few cars around the streets or anyone around, makes us understand the gravity of the situation. Yesterday 9 Chinese doctors who specialized in COVID-19 arrived in Rome and should help us fight this damned virus. They also brought medical supplies such as masks and other medical instruments. The hospitals in northern Italy are collapsing, 1100 people have died so far and now they are coming to the south from me and the hospitals are also preparing for us. Unfortunately, our government has not been able to take action before and now we are in this absurd situation ... I know there are friends from Germany like my friend MPC 7500 or Flingblackbird, others who are from other states, how are you? evolving the situation from you? We have also started the local super computer to try to find a solution as soon as possible, so not only Summit but also others are working to try to defeat this damned virus ... In any case, we currently situation is dramatic ...

ok Classic thanks, I'll try to do all this procedure as I wrote. After this do I have to do anything else?

I'll post the message that this person sent on the Italian Amiga forum, his is a direct experience so you can better understand what I said in the previous post.

today we talk about the x5000 / 20 which is the one on the market.
the x5000 in the P5020 configuration has a ram access equal to a 2001 p4. it is true that the ram it mounts are ddr3 1333mhz but not used with access results equal to 2Gb / s the situation worsens if the memory is in writing where performance drops to 1.5 Gb / s.

to make a comparison the quad g5 machine of 2005 mounts ddr2 667mhz with 7 Gb / s in r and w and 9.5 Gb / s if altivec operations are used.

also the machine mentioned above has serious problems on dma especially if pci slots are used. using pci slots the maximum allocated memory is 3.5 Gb.
the P5020 CPU manages a maximum of 512Mb on the PCI and PCIE slots. to put it simply: if we mount 2 modern GPUs that use 256Mb cad opening on the pcie and a sound card or other on another pcie slot we have serious performance problems and serious system instability.

lshw or lstopo on linux presents a totally senseless hardware topography where there is an out of the norm device with bus and bridge nesting inside each other and not on the same branch and same level as happens on any machine that is x86, arm, powerpc to the world. to be clearer imagine 1 bus and many bridges one nested in the other up to 5 nests and then end in a bridge with another bridge with the pci to pcie converter and a two pci ...

the pcie's performance is currently worse than the worst agp bus of the worst amigang machine ... writing is almost equal to cyberstormppc on amiga 4000.

the l3 cache is non-existent or better only has functions of caching the network packets .... but the beauty is that the internal lan do not work both on amigaos and on linux they are in dummy for the dma problems described above.

uboot is the one in 2014 who manages and maintains uboot is a volunteer who has serious problems with megalomania and wisdom ...
the writer has repeatedly suggested to the gentlemen cat and fox to contact m3x but with poor results ... maybe because m3x you pay the megalomaniac is free.

I forgot that the p5020 has whole performance not bad but the CPU is suffocated by the poor performance of the ram.

the cyrus is a machine that already exists in varisys what they added was a + that I think is just the beautiful and useless xorro.

for now it's all about x5000 the amiga that wasn't there and it was better that it remained that way.

This is what he posted on the forum, then I don't know specifically but I don't think the truth is far away because you understand that the guy knows what he says ...

Operating Systems and Porting / Re: Possibility to install Amiga OS 4

I understood then you tell me that the processor is not enough but there are other features that prevent support for that operating system ... Too bad I would have tried it willingly, I consider Amiga OS the best operating system ever written on computers and since the machines on which turns are really badly made, unfortunately it has no possibility of further development remaining confined where it is currently ... A real shame ...! I read someone's experience on the X5000 and says that it was really negative and that these machines are badly made even in terms of architecture and that they are a joke, especially for the price they have ...

Firmware / Re: New firmware V2.00 BMC procedure
« on: March 11, 2020, 04:32:29 pm »
It seems that no one answers the second question ... In any case, let's unzip these files that I downloaded, after doing so it tells me to turn off the Backbird system, reboot the BMC so I suppose I have to disconnect completely, restart the BMC, then tells me to transfer the unzipped file to the BMC by typing this command: / run / initramfs / image-bmc, is it correct or does it take anything else? Then it tells me that I have to run the command: fw_printenv | grep eth1addr and write down the MAC address, then it tells me that I have to reboot again then turn off the board completely and restart, wait 5 or 10 minutes after which this other command must be done: fw_setenv ethaddr <IPMI MAC address written down earlier> and if I have not misunderstood what is written in parentheses I have to replace it with the MAC address previously marked, up to here have I understood everything well or am I missing something?

Then I misunderstood the restriction.  I had read an article some time ago that seemed to say this but evidently what I deduced is incorrect.  But sorry at this point the question arises spontaneously, how come it has no compatibility being even Amiga OS 4 written entirely for Power processors?  What makes it incompatible?

Blackbird / Re: HDMI output for mother board
« on: March 09, 2020, 08:11:02 am »
nglevin hello sorry I'm only reading your post now, no no the problem lies in the BMC firmware, Raptor confirmed it to me long ago that there is this problem and not only this. Sometimes it turns on, stays 15 seconds and turns off and I have to turn off the power completely and turn it back on to bring down the initial firmware of the BMC. If instead it loads everything smoothly and the HDMI output works immediately, then the problem never arises and every time I start the machine from standby it works perfectly without problems. The problem arises only when I load the initial firmware after I disconnect the total power for safety reasons in the evening. Now I'm trying to figure out how to update the firmware to see if the problem resolves ...

Perfect up to here we are, in the guide it says download and then turn off everything, when my doubt was in this, if I download on Power System and then turn off as I do, however I don't know if he wants it for some reason in any case even the Power System . Well done this, once the files are downloaded and unzipped, does it take a specific directory where to put these files?

Now you are using Kernel 5.4.0.2 and not 5.5.0.rc1 + ... I see that you also have the gnome in version 3.35, they said shortly that they will release version 3.36 of the Gnome, it should happen on the 11th of this month. ..

well since no one can answer me I will try to be more precise in my problem. So at first Raptor tells me to download, extract and unzip the file and then turn off the Power System. First question: where should I download, extract and decompress the file from the Power System or from the second computer connected to the Blackbird ??? Let's go step by step so I also understand how to do it ...

So I think you should wait now. In fact, I have not yet understood what will happen with the new Kernels regarding the operation of Navi10 / 14 because obviously we must always be able to use the graphics cards otherwise it doesn't make sense ... I am currently doing very well and I hold on to 5.5.0.rc1 with patches, then when they give me guarantees of being able to use new Kernels that support Navi10 / 14 then I will be happy to install the new Kernels.

Operating Systems and Porting / Possibility to install Amiga OS 4
« on: March 08, 2020, 04:01:31 am »
Good morning to all the Power community, in this discussion I would like to introduce the Amiga question that I haven't seen much to deal with for now but which in my opinion deserves being AmigaOS, an operating system written completely for Power processors. Do any of you know a way to be able to install Amiga OS 4 on our systems? If I remember correctly, I read that they put a sort of block for which only with an Amiga XE machine you can start the installation and run the software. Anyone know more about this story?

Got it all clear. And why did you decide to install Kernel 5.6? The patch is then provided by default in these new Kernels or should we always install it ourselves?

General Discussion / The pride of being Power!
« on: March 07, 2020, 04:19:46 am »
Friends of Power comunity, I decided to open the first general discussion on our beloved architecture because this damned Corona Virus COVID-19 is putting a strain on the whole world but it is precisely for this reason that something that concerns us closely, is being setting in motion to resolve the situation. I speak obviously of Summit that for a few days now, it begins to peep out not only in the specific articles of technology and computers where it usually is but rather in the news pages of every day and for everyone. I shared these articles both here and on Facebook as well, just to pay homage and support the work that the United States Energy is doing and to praise our beautiful architecture and our legendary Power 9 because maybe thanks to him there will be a great contribution to defeating COVID-19! Let's say it is a great satisfaction and a pinch of pride for me to see this thing, as a sort of revenge on all those who continue to think that in the world there is only X86 and only with that you can do everything ...! So I'd say Summit come on, we're with you!
