General CPU Discussion / Re: The point about Power 10 currently
« on: December 10, 2021, 05:19:04 pm »
In fact, this is what I have been saying since the beginning, currently Power 10 cannot be used in any way in a home environment, even if it were all open source! They must first enrich the offer with the mid-range and low-range versions, then in that case there will certainly be a big difference!

Understood, so you think that basically it is not really an advantage that of X86 that has vectors at 256 or 512 from what I understand ... Do you think we will be able in the end to have Firefox without those limits that up to now this Browser has on Power also compared to Chromium? I see that unfortunately I still can't go to all the sites like I do on Chromium ... I think it would be nice, given the work you do with so much passion on Firefox, to be able to finally package a version specially dedicated to us of Power, maybe diversifying some colors of the logo, for example instead of orange, use the fire red which in my opinion would represent a Power version well ...

I understand, so we have a good part of those instructions available, certainly those 601s would not even make sense to date, I think they are too dated by now and that's right in the end. The article I read a few years ago was correct so fine. What about floating point vector and compute units instead, has Intel really outdone us in this area or are we still the best with Alti Vec's direct successors?

Guys excuse some curiosity, I read some time ago that the PowerPc instructions have been incorporated into the most recent Power ISAs, so theoretically, the old instructions that IBM and Motorola created specifically for PowerPC, are now also usable on the new Power, right? I ask because I remember that when PowerPc was born from Power, it eliminated some instructions from Power, which they said at the time were useless for the home desktop environment and instead inserted instructions made specifically for Power PC in its place ... Another curiosity that I I ask is related to floating point computation units such as the VSX and the like, deriving from the legendary Altivec. Because some people say, for example I have read some of these comments on Phoronix, that the floating point compute units of the Power processors are poor compared especially to the X86 equivalents! I wonder is such a thing ever possible when it was PowerPC's Altivec at the time, he taught Intel how to make floating point computing units, much less performing up to the SS2 version ... I don't explain this what, indeed, should be one of Power's greatest strengths, especially with the evolution that certainly all these units have had over the years ...

Operating Systems and Porting / Re: [NEWS] Debian 11 is out

Yes, I understand everything, do not worry, in the meantime from the whole Power community you enjoy the fullest support and respect and I believe that nobody here denies it, so do what you feel like doing and don't give a damn about these useless people!  As for Debian 11 instead, I noticed that since I boot it with Kernel 5.15.2, it is no longer crashing on boot, maybe it's a 5.12.8 problem that has something that doesn't work well with Debian 11. With Ubuntu on the other hand when I used it didn't give me any problems.  In any case, I continue to monitor it to see if it continues to start without problems, if it does then I can say that the problem lies precisely in that version of Kernel.

Applications and Porting / Re: Proton on Power

Yes, I know it normally does that work on X86 but I thought that if you could have the code available, you could also make a version for PPC64le but obviously you can't because it only works with X86, too bad ...

So do you think it is difficult to be able to make a version of Proton for our architecture? They say it works very well in porting games from Windows to Linux, that's why I thought it was interesting as an application ...

Applications and Porting / Proton on Power
« on: November 27, 2021, 04:24:55 am »
Hello everyone, lately I have read some articles about the great development that the Proton application is having on Linux and I have also read that it is completely open source and therefore accessible. I searched first in the various sections of the forum but it seems to me that I have not yet found anything about it. Do you have any news if this Proton will also come to us on Power?

Oops I didn't know anything about this friend Daniel, I'm sorry about this thing, I didn't know anything about this story ... I hope you can fix it as soon as possible given the work you do for Debian, especially for our Power!

General CPU Discussion / The point about Power 10 currently
« on: November 25, 2021, 01:41:09 pm »
Friends of the Power community, I think the time has come to take stock of the Power 10 situation because in my opinion at the moment there is a bit too much impatience combined with general confusion. So currently, if you have read everything correctly, it is clear that Power 10 was launched by IBM but only and exclusively for the 1080 series servers and we all know that they are the high-end ones. Furthermore, it has been repeatedly observed that the processors currently in use by these servers, obviously are the high-end ones, ie with a minimum of 15 cores (16 but one is turned off if necessary) and a maximum of 30 cores. Now we all know well that these numbers, also linked to the range to which these servers belong, clearly makes us understand that these are CPUs clearly of the type to understand, direct successors of MONZA and LAGRANGE of Power 9 and therefore high-end. It is perfectly obvious that currently, even if the firmware were completely free, Raptor would not be able to produce a P10 based motherboard on the spot because the costs would obviously be prohibitive. So the reasons that today cannot lead to a production of P10-based motherboards are both the current lack of free firmware but also the lack of medium and low-range solutions, equivalent to our current Sforza P9. So I would say that instead of continuing to ask Raptor when and if it will produce P10 based cards, we should concentrate on waiting for the release of the mid and low range solutions in the meantime, which I don't think will arrive shortly and later, once they start. to exit, then also see if IBM will start as I think, to release the firmware sources completely open and ask Raptor what programs they will have at that point on P10. Currently I repeat, there is nothing feasible because even if the firmware were already free, the prices are prohibitive and there are no CPU offers equivalent to Sforza which is what we all use on our Power systems for desktop. and small home servers ... Let's be patient and see what will come out maybe already in 2022 by IBM on the medium and low range and then we will start to have everything clearer!

Classic obviously no one says that Forefox's problem depends on you indeed, we just have to thank you for the great work you do and we know that your job is not to develop it. I'm just saying that at the moment Chromium is the only good and well-functioning browser on Power and I think we have to do everything to carry it forward, even unofficially as we did from version 85 to version 87. Only now we are stopped because the friend TLE doesn't even have time to get down to getting the source code. When he finds the time I hope he will show me too how he does it so I can see if I can learn the procedure and thus contribute to the development of Chromium on Power ...

General Hardware Discussion / Re: 2u Blackbird Build with 18 cores?!

A good way to test the CPU can be to do some compilations and also be able to establish the number of cores or thread to use, I would have done some tests in the tel sense I think ...

GPU Compute / Accelerators / Re: Blackbird Radeon RX580

Succeeded, thanks again to friend MPC for his great advice, basically my mistake was simply the missing grub update command. I didn't do it simply because I believed that the Grub-Customizer application itself did both save and update the grub but I was wrong. Now I will compile 5.15 for Ubuntu as well. Thanks again MPC and also friend Classic Has for their valuable advice.

« on: November 19, 2021, 01:05:46 am »
Perfect thanks, I'm waiting for your news and if you can teach me how to get the sources I will be deeply grateful, the Raptor procedure no longer works, I think because of the cursed Google block on Power ... Fedora for now I stopped using it, as soon as they fix it then I reassemble it, for now Ubuntu and a little Debian

Hi Daniel, I don't understand your message to be honest, I personally have described my current experience with Debian, it being understood that I mainly use Fedora and Ubuntu and lately, given the unresolved Fedora issues, I have focused on Ubuntu which I see going better than the others and also having more software available and more repositories also available than Debian itself. As for the 4k pages, I now compile kernels only with 4k pages, but I don't know what these patches you have developed about them are. Having said that I have seen that unfortunately Bullsye has problems with starting on the GPU and in fact it often freezes at startup, turns off the GPU and does not complete the loading of the Kernel, so it is clear that there is some problem, perhaps in the latest firmware I don't know, the fact is that there is unfortunately ...
