Blackbird / Re: How to implement Secure Boot on the Blackbird
« on: September 30, 2020, 01:42:43 pm »
Thanks, I go through it.

Update: it worked but broke the update (through the UI/KDE or dnf update).

I had to uninstall using an RPM command in order to update other applications and kernel.

It seems the two methods (dnf and rpm) do not get along very well.

Hi,

Now I've updated the system (there were 27 updates) and Chromium is failing to update automatically (Plasma Desktop Workspace).

Is there any manual procedure I can do to update chromium? see below the error message, it's the same issue I circumvented when downloading through the rpm command.

Thanks in advance.

If you look at the Chromium Gitlab page there is a download link how to install on other RPM based distributions:
Code: [Select]
sudo rpm -Uvh https://github.com/chromium-ppc64le/chromium-ppc64le/releases/download/v84.0.4147.89-1/chromium-browser-stable-84.0.4147.89-1.ppc64le.rpm
This should work.

Edit: Don't miss to "sudo dnf install liberation-fonts"

Tnanks a lot! Worked!

Hi,

Thanks, but still did not work. I've followed the instructions and even downloaded again chromium-ppc64le.repo and saved (replaced) it on etc/yum.repos.d

One additional piece of information: I had chromium installed before, removed it to try to fix another issue and then could not reinstall it following the procedure described by VDDVSS. I then installed ungoogled-chromium, where I'm writing this reply.

Any other idea? I've copy/pasted the full command/response below.

Regards

Hi All,

I'm trying to install chromium-browser-stable but getting error 500 when trying to download https://gitlab.com/chromium-ppc64le/chromium-ppc64le/-/jobs/682882047/artifacts/raw/docker-root/target/chromium-browser-stable-84.0.4147.125-1.ppc64le.rpm

Is this something temporary?

Just for the record, I've succeeded installing ungoogled-chromium-browser-stable.

Thank you all.

Applications and Porting / Zoom crashes with "Aw, Snap!" message on Chromium
« on: September 23, 2020, 08:43:26 am »
Hi All,

I've managed to use Zoom conferences on Chromium but it stopped working and display this annoying error when I try to join with audio from the computer.

On Firefox I can see what's going on in the meeting but it does not let me join with audio and displays a message my browser does not support it and suggests that I use Chrome or Firefox (weird to see this when using Firefox) instead.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Blackbird / Re: How to increase storage: another nvme/PCI or SATA
« on: September 22, 2020, 09:35:33 pm »
Hi, thanks for replying. I did not know I could combine multiple disk on a single PCI slot.

I use my Blackbird mostly as a commercial desktop. The single most demanding IO task it does is when Thunderbird compresses the mailbox, which happens a few times every day.

Blackbird / How to increase storage: another nvme/PCI or SATA
« on: September 22, 2020, 04:34:01 pm »
Hi All,

My Blackbird came with 128GB Nvme/PCI. I want to expand that with another disk and add to existing /root and /user logical volumes (Fedora32) using LVM.

Should I use the ONLY available PCI slot or sacrifice performance and add a SATA SSD? How bad would it be work with a combination of PCI and SATA?

Thanks in advance.

General OpenPOWER Discussion / Re: Raptor/PowerPC Training
« on: September 21, 2020, 09:48:37 am »
I do not suspect that Raptor is a large enough entity to be able to take on such training. Perhaps maybe just sharing how-to videos. I know I would love some such guidance on upgrading pre 2.0 firmware.

That would be great. I do not see them active on YouTube. I think it would be great if their engineers post how to videos and also would talk about architecture e how things work for the enthusiast newcomer.

Firmware / Re: Basic understanding of OPAL
« on: August 17, 2020, 01:16:24 pm »
Something else which intrigues me is what is skiboot? I suppose it's a Linux kernel. I read OPAL is started as part of skiboot and continues to run after Petitboot has loaded the OS and exited. Skiboot running OPAL after the OS has started has a relatively small footprint, some 0.5GB on my system (not so small as Mirage, which runs with some 30MB of RAM). As I'm not a code guy, I have no clue and would appreciate any inputs about this also.

Firmware / Re: Basic understanding of OPAL
« on: August 17, 2020, 12:51:59 pm »
Well, that makes sense. OSs can handle that through whatever drivers (maybe OPAL can be better characterized as a "standard" driver for OSs running on openpower). But anyway, any OS which has been compromised will continue to be compromised boot after boot, it's statefull. The OPAL seems to add some tier between the HW and the OS that is not present on x86 machines and I like it. When I started this thread I wanted to better understand OPAL functionality and architecture. Now it's much clear to me. Thank you.

By the way, does OPAL "harden" the security of openpower systems by moving to firmware (stateless) hardware related activities? Would it help prevent Evil Maid attacks on USB? Or at the driver level with all devices?
