Yep. I snagged a 231 for $175, probably the greatest deal I've ever gotten. 32 GB memory, too; really all I need is the Blackbird itself, some sort of cooling (I really want to see about getting that SecuFirm 2 mount fabricated but without a way to open up the files to confirm stuff like measurements for a quote; that's something for later), and a bunch of storage. POWER9 might be aging but it'd still be the fastest computer I ever owned, so I can't imagine I won't be perfectly happy with it for a decade or so from now if I'm still even happy with a Power Mac G4.

Whoops, meant to reply.

I went looking for it again, but couldn't find it -- it was just a Reddit post, so grains of salt anyway. I imagine it had some basis in fact, most of this kind of stuff is, but I certainly couldn't verify it myself.

I've seen one once, but haven't since. I'm thinking there might be a handful showing up there when the S1-based boards come out.

As far as I know, the plan for the Solid Silicon hardware is to release late this year. Will there be a period where you can buy either a Blackbird or the new offering, or will it directly replace it? I assume Vikings keeps a couple in stock at any one time so they'll wait until they run out to discontinue their listing, but I'm not in Europe.

I dunno about their motives, but even just from a performance standpoint, I imagine they have a point. AMD's own software is really bad, and I can't help but imagine their firmware could be improved upon too. Plus, being able to actually see what goes on in there is nice.

I've heard the same too, that it's had it since Vega -- but that it needs PSP or ME on the CPU side too to be effective.
Would anyone happen to know the max length a card can be, and if a 2.25 slot card might fit without blocking the second PCIe slot? Seems like all the RX 7000s are over 2 slots tall besides some of the base 7600s and presumably the 7500s. I'm still unsure of whether or not to go for a 7600 (XT), 7700 XT, W6600, or maybe W6800.

It's in a much earlier state, but OGS (Link) is meant to eventually be a 1:1 accurate as-released GoldSource clone, so that'll be very interesting as the Sierra release of Half-Life is my favorite version of it.

Loads in fine for me. Page 1 is a generic looking fullscreen video of that mountain shot, page two has three eighths of a paragraph selling open hardware kinda distastefully in my opinion before saying their silicon is "future-proof" (a claim shared by paragons of futurism eMachines), page three is just one sentence and a full screen image of the X1, page four the same (though a sentence twice as long) for the S1, and page five is literally just a giant gray screen with an email address in slightly less big, also gray-on-gray text compared to the much bigger white on blue or black on gray that we've seen before then. You're really not missing out, it's the same kind of site that's almost formatted more like a business card that I hate.

I mean, is it possible it's a POWER9 with bumped up ISA compatibility? If so, it would be nice if it was still socket compatible, so that people could reuse their old CPUs; I just bought a 16-core 160W 231 a couple months ago. In any case, it's good that it exists at all, but hopefully its successor uses the same socket.

Even if amd64 amdgpu supports it, ppc64le might not. That was a big problem with Navi 2x, and even after 23 was enabled 22 and 21 weren't necessarily, at least not in 2022 they weren't -- they might be now. Still, it seems pretty exciting and I bet both are a good experience. Love how powerful they both are for a single slot card, though, and hopefully there's even a 7-class card in single slot one day.

I definitely agree that Raptor should have at least a bridge account on ActivityPub, even if it won't be checked for replies. Checking up on what Raptor is doing is the only reason I haven't closed my Twitter account outright in favor of just using AP.

I've always felt that if you want to use CDE daily, it would be best to install it first and use NsCDE for Qt/GTK compatibility, while using as much of the dt* suite as possible. I tried to do that once, but for whatever reason it didn't compile very well on Fedora 37 (even though another computer with F36 did it just fine).

Any updates in the meantime? 6700 is the same price or cheaper than 6600 XT here, so it would be nice to get that card instead as better value.
