Was there feedback from Nightdive?

I asked if they could do a "source available" akin to UT4 since system shock remake uses the same engine. IIRC it had some proprietary licensed bits added in. Maybe they would give it some modicum of consideration if enough people chimed in. Getting game devs to even support linux in general let alone a different arch is quite an uphill battle though.. Considering how things are going in general with corporate and government control of computing systems maybe more people will move into the open source sphere with time.. I know I did 5ish years ago.

Ive asked them before they wouldnt do it

Let's hope they will accept the hardware offer from Tim.

For now we could always play the game with box64

oh wow, who would turn that deal down... there's been some work on a re implementation of early unreal engine. Maybe one day we can play deus ex on PPC64LE.. I've also reached out to nightdive studios about supporting the arch as well.. Wish I was offered a system to get half life 2 / source engine running

I'm interested in some parts if you still have them

https://github.com/ioquake/ioq3/pull/860 for supporting LE

@ClassicHasClass @power9mm could you please help review the PR for me? Many thanks

Yeah I saw the update, I currently don't own a power system at the moment to try it out. Waiting on the new systems to roll out for now. I would try the CPMA mod as that was having bad performance (and its one of the only active mods for quake 3)

edit: saw it was ioquake3... the main dev is.. eccentric to put it lightly. Eager to try the quake3e commit though. Thanks for that.

Applications and Porting / Re: [GAMES] Doom 3 BFG bad ass game XD

dhewm3 starts for me to the main menu, but starting actual game crashes after loading the level.

yes this was my experience, I was able to load random maps and some i could play through them fully, try something like map game/mars_city2 for example. Another thing I had messed with was image_cachemegs as that sometimes would prevent crashes when set to a few GB or something. I posted my initial crash reports here https://github.com/dhewm/dhewm3/issues/508
When I have a PPC machine again I'm going to explore getting Half Life 2 to compile

Someone should try to look at the dhewm 3 sourceport again, it's in most repos. I think it was in fedora. BFG edition is really not that good, the only benefit is the engine tic being updated to handle 120fps everything else is quite bad vs the original and it also lacks mod support and its missing EAX from the original doom 3. I forget why but dhewm 3 would crash in random places. BFG edition doesnt even have dedicated servers afaik

I remember this being the major hang up with the STALKER engine when getting it to compile for ppc64le (x-ray engine) i forgot what we did to get it to work and unfortunately i've lost all the code and work that was done due to theft of the hard drives i had been using in my system from a storage unit break in. There was some kind of working version of it though for ppc64... Also the guy who helped made it possible has vanished and most likely for the worst sad to say...

The point now is to understand when there will be stable support for the new rdna 4 instead, I would like to buy for example the radeon pro 9700 to upgrade my 5700 after a long time... We'll see what happens in the next few months...
hows the rdna 3 support on power currently? i have a w7600 workstation card id like to use whenever the new power raptor systems roll out.

Well, hopefully the new raptor systems are much cheaper than the price hikes the power9 offerings had

Firmware / Re: Maybe bricked the firmware on my Blackbird

The write protect needs to be enabled in firmware which defies the whole point of hardware write protection.
Is that where the write protect range is set? I know theres DIP switches on the board itsself

As for intensive, unreal engine 4 has worked, and so has openxray engine (stalker)
this is pretty interesting though, i mean since xbox360 is ppc already im sure something can be worked out....

Operating Systems and Porting / Re: [NEWS] Fedora 41 is out!
« on: December 31, 2024, 12:38:24 pm »
I don't see how (or why) a Fedora install would change the pnor. There is a write protect switch on the motherboard that will prevent the BMC from writing to the FLASH chips.
it doesn't have a WP range by default so afaik flipping the dip switch as it is out of the box won't do anything..

I don't think this would work as written for the original PowerPC Q3VM, which was big-endian (little-endian PowerPC wasn't really a thing in those days). There may also be a few 32-64 bit edges, though I would think that would be minor.
it wouldn't, it needs a new one. Game/sourceport still works as is though, just some mods will have performance degradation..
