Title: Chimera Linux is entering alpha
Post by: siliconbadger on June 14, 2023, 08:44:35 pm
As of 2023-06-11, per this post: https://chimera-linux.org/news/2023/06/entering-alpha.html

I booted the live ISO in graphical (RAM) mode on my Talos II, was met briefly with a console login, followed by a GUI which would not respond.  I could change to a console and enter commands, and when switching back to GUI I noticed a background image had been loaded in place of the initial solid blue desktop.  It seems it's only redrawing when I switch away and back; mouse pointer moves but no input produces a response.

I'm just using the VGA output from the AST2500, no GPU, so I'm interested to hear if anyone else has tried it yet.

I will do in the next couple of days, I think. Never heard about that issue on the Chimera IRC. It should just work, also with the AST framebuffer.

I used the LIVE ISO image and dd it to a USB drive. The ISO worked as expected. Also the installation so far. I am not done yet though. Oh, so far I'm also using the AST framebuffer. I have a Blackbird. But the maintainer also has a TalosII.

The error you describe sounds strange. But I have no idea what the reason could be.

Kernel is 6.3.7, BTW.

Yesterday, I talked to q66. It seems for whatever reason GDM starts with xorg. Then you ran into that issue:
https://github.com/chimera-linux/cports/issues/184

q66 will look into it.

At my place GDM on Fedora 37 also starts with Xorg, on Chimera I also have the same thing. Anything wrong with that?

On Chimera Wayland is the default, not Xorg.

From q66:
siliconbadger: i just tried booting the latest live usb on a talos 2 with no gpu installed and it came up without hanging and in wayland mode as expected.

This distro is definitely on my radar. Once it has reached beta, I am going to go all in.
