Title: Updating firmware from the live host: possible?
Post by: Borley on July 04, 2020, 04:36:43 pm
I'm still trying to wrap my head around the 1.00 > 2.00 firmware update procedure.

It looks like the files need to be sent from another computer. Can this be done simply by wiring ethernet ports 0 or 1 directly to the BMC ethernet port?

I would rather avoid having to trust another computer in the process, if at all possible.

I guess you could loop it back with the Ethernet ports, but I think a less technically disgusting way would be a USB serial port connected to the BMC headers on the board, and upload things via serial.

Some reading up (https://wiki.raptorcs.com/wiki/Troubleshooting/BMC_Connection_Guide) would have clarified this:

Note that you cannot access the BMC in any way from the host system over network -- the NCSI interface has no support for this, and all access including pings will fail.

Anyway, I have gotten it upgraded a few months ago, the proper way.
