Hi Hasturtium, I have been using Debian for a few years now and I must say that I have now found my ideal size on Power.  As for the various things you want to know, Chromium I can confirm that it is stable and works perfectly, in fact, Debian has been the starting operating system for Chromium on Power for some time now as Raptor develops it officially on Debian and updates it regularly and punctually.  As for the rdna2 graphics card, I know that from Kernel 6.2 onwards, it is regularly supported and works without problems.  Friend TLE has been using a Radeon 6600 for some time now with success.  I currently still use an XT5700 and therefore the previous generation but in any case I compile the Kernel myself to keep it always updated to the latest version and in fact I have recently compiled and installed 6.6.5.  To make it work regularly you need 3 things on Debian, 1 the Kernel from version 6.2 or higher, 2 the updated Debian firmware and then lastly the file called XORG.CONF set in the correct way so as to tell Xorg that you are using an external graphics card instead of internal AST.

However, this discussion should have been opened in the session dedicated to operating systems, strange that the moderators haven't moved it yet... Having said that, I don't know how you use Ubuntu on Power, it has several bugs that have never been resolved, see the Firefox ones, just to name a few one and then others that I encountered when I was using it and which led me to switch to Debian and now sometimes return to Fedora a little...

Updated yesterday from 37, I hadn't put 38 precisely because it was disgusting again and so I decided to wait and leave 37 which is fine instead. I confirm what my friend TLE said, everything is good and works well, the Gnome 45 works well and runs as smoothly as the version for Fedora 37 and therefore they have again optimized everything in the correct way. As for the graphics server, I must say that I also encountered some problems under Wayland. If I start under the latter, it sets the 4k resolution as default, i.e. 3840 x 2160 but if I want to change there is a big bug and it doesn't allow me to do so. So I went back to the x11 server as well which is still better today after a long time... I'm now waiting to see Chromium return to Fedora, let's see if it will be possible...

I get it so you need more time to work on it.  I hope you can complete the work so you can also use Chromium which has now been running stable on Debian for a few years thanks to Raptor.

So they have solved the problem of Gnome's slow speed finally, let's just hope that this time they keep it in the next versions too.  Can't you tell us anything new about Chromium?  We still don't have a valid alternative to Firefox when needed unfortunately... On Debian I have both and they work perfectly because if one of the 2 doesn't work well there's the other and even if it's rare but it can happen...

Yes friends, we agree, I know well that this new soc is a Power 10 and I also know perfectly well that at the time Motorola produced the various series of Power processors in the home version, i.e. PowerPC, together with IBM. Except that at the time it was very different, Motorola we all know that it was another great microprocessor manufacturer and it was the only one that was able to produce excellent versions of this family of CPUs. But let's remember that in any case it is still a slightly revised series for home and not Power processors for servers like we now have and let's always remember that Motorola was Motorola! Now the Power CPU, the real Power CPU is only IBM, even if another company takes the license and produces it, don't forget that the main thing that other companies' products have in common are the instructions. But the manufacturer then makes the CPU, the performance of an IBM product is not that of another manufacturer and vice versa. we know this because we have several examples on other architectures of how performance changes from manufacturer to manufacturer and yet they are always with the same ARM or they are proprietary processes and rest assured that Samsung's 7 nm is not IBM's 7 just as GF's 14 was not IBM's which in fact made its owner use 14... For all these things I say that in any case, it is very difficult for third-party companies to be able to come close to IBM quality also for reasons of investments as well as of technology possessed. For all this I reiterate that for me only IBM in my home and therefore I really hope that with Power 11 they can return like 8 and 9 or totally open so that we can go back to mounting IBM and have their power again in our home like now with P9!

If anything I'm most interested in is IBM returning to its core open source design, so that it has a Power 11 processor that's exactly as open as a Power 8 or Power 9, I'm not going to buy Power CPUs. that they are not IBM because their technology is the best ever for their processors and I don't think that any other company, no matter how good, can reach their level and therefore I don't intend to change companies for these microprocessors. IBM creates it and IBM must produce it or have it produced by one of its direct partners to be the best, this at least is my humble opinion and then obviously it is debatable by anyone.

In my opinion it is more convenient to wait for Power 11, at least as far as I'm concerned, at the moment I don't need to advance so I'm perfect with Power 9 and then apparently there is more possibility that 11 will be completely open as Raptor wants. The only thing I hope is that at least after all the money spent on research and development for 2 nanometers, they can use it with Power 11!

I think the fundamental point is only 1, I don't think there are many conjectures to make, if IBM releases all the firmware, then Raptor can think of making a Power 10 machine. Otherwise I think, we will hardly see it...

User Zone / Print no longer starts and cups doesn't allow sudden changes

Guys, I have an anomalous problem that I can't explain with Cups on Debian. Suddenly the printing no longer starts but there are 2 things that I don't understand that are really absurd in my opinion. The first is that the system sees the printer as normal and ready to go but it doesn't start. The second is that cups no longer allows me to make any changes, it always tells me that it is forbidden and no longer even allows me to delete and reset the printer from 0. It should be noted that the printer works properly both on another computer and on Fedora if I try with another operating system. The problem is therefore only on Debian which I don't understand why it suddenly stops printing and has cups blocked and no longer editable. Even when it asks me for my user name and password, it continues to forbid me from making any changes. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling cups but the problem persists... I can no longer understand what to do to restore printing...

Perhaps we will never see Power 10 in the home version due to that now famous problem of the firmware not being completely open, which apparently cannot be opened at this point otherwise I think IBM would have already done it... I think by now we are already thinking about Power 11 to help us renew our favorite computers...
