Talos II / Re: Petitboot lock after Fedora 36 update
« on: December 15, 2022, 12:21:46 am »
All right, I'm back up. The Blackbird did the fixing of the XFS volume - there was a stuck log entry. Arguably Fedora may not have unmounted it cleanly, but Petitboot shouldn't just crash as a result. There really needs to be a way to bypass mounting completely (more details https://www.talospace.com/2022/12/when-petitboot-barfs-everythings-vomit.html ).

Thanks to @sharkcz for letting me bounce ideas off him in E-mail.

Well, this just happened to me after the Fedora 37 upgrade and I'm pissed. I don't have another machine set up to fix the filesystem and Petitboot won't respond to any keys before trying to mount filesystems. I'm not sure what I can do with it yet.

@sharkcz, what can we do?

Excellent!

For me, my T2 meets pretty much all my needs except Turbo Tax and Android development, and I'm working on the latter in fits and starts (if nothing else, getting the build tools to run under QEMU).

Sorry to hear that. What didn't meet your needs?

I also found an article about running x86_64 executables on ppc64le

You can just use QEMU's user mode for this. I use it for doing some Android work with the Google binary-only tools. Works fine with 64K pages (on this Fedora workstation).

Now you know how much pain it was to build TenFourFox. That was about 14 hours with the G5 tied up roaring away.

No, probably not. Ignoring endianness for the sake of discussion, while Cell does have a conventional PowerPC core as the PPE, the SPEs are unique and so is the EIB connecting them.

tle and rheaplex, are you using the same Marvell chipset?

The SATA controller in this unit is another Marvell, but a different chipset (lspci says 0001:01:00.0 SATA controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE9235 PCIe 2.0 x2 4-port SATA 6 Gb/s Controller (rev 11)). I believe this is the one Raptor sells. It has two optical drives connected; the main volumes / and /home are NVMe SSDs.

Yes, with my SATA optical drives. It's kept me on 5.13 because it won't see them at all.

@sharkcz have you run into this?

This is hardly exact, but I'm happy with what I have (combination of a modified KDE and GTK theme, hand tweaks).

I've migrated to KDE Plasma on Fedora. Nuts to GNOME.

Thanks for doing this.

Blackbird / Re: Blackbird Cooling
« on: October 08, 2022, 05:15:37 pm »
I do think the case is a big part of the problem. I certainly wouldn't run even an 8-core in an mATX case. Even the 4-core in my mATX system probably runs the fans more often than I'd like.

Vikings is working on a liquid cooling setup and this might be an option for you when they get it up for sale.

There are no ambient sensors on the board that I know of, and the manual doesn't mention any. The manual adds, for what it's worth, "The C1P9S01 factory setpoint for CPU core temperature is 60°C, and the system will attempt to maintain the cores at that temperature even under light or no load. As a result, a lightly loaded system may not benefit from air drawn over the CPU heatsink(s), and mainboard / peripheral cooling predominantly comes from chassis fans in this situation. For this reason, it is important to connect at least one chassis fan providing airflow over the mainboard surface in order to provide cooling for memory modules and other active components."
