Firmware / Re: network card to reduce attack surface?

The BMC question is what Kestrel should ultimately solve.

Actually, NetBSD is a really good suggestion. It shouldn't take much to get the port done because they could borrow from FreeBSD and OpenBSD for the sysdep portions and the rest is all on the HAL.

I don't think this is an issue with current releases anymore as long as your device is supported for TRIMming.

I just want to say I think this is a great cause and very generous.  :)

If you're using a 64K page kernel (Fedora, for example), I can attest that the WX7100 works fine with amdgpu. I haven't had a need to try something newer.

I wouldn't imagine any significant problems with connecting to an x86 server from a ppc64le machine, and I'm pretty sure it worked fine back in the day even with big-endian.

Enjoyed Stalker the movie, so I might have to try that when I get a free second.

I use NTP, though I have a local stratum 1 server on the internal network (GPS).

In (some) fairness to IBM, Raptor systems -- despite their cost and their visibility -- are considered the "low end" of the OpenPOWER ecosystem. IBM makes their money on their big institutional partners who don't care much about the things we do (openness, auditability), and it's more important to IBM to give them a new performance shiny to keep them in the sales-and-service fold lest they jump ship for x86. If this was what got them to market quicker, then we lose out. That's just the way the business is.

That said, IBM has also taken a bit of a black eye over Power10 as a result and because Raptor systems *are* so visible, it's harmed their secondary goal to make the architecture more generally relevant again. I think this will be factored into Power11 but there's never any guarantee.

Interesting numbers. I would expect that figure to improve with software refinement.

If you're directly wired together, the gateway IP can be 0.0.0.0 because the only other host is your client. I don't think that's your problem. Since you know the MAC address for the Blackbird, I suppose you could forge an arp entry (arp -s).

Excellent! I'll take two Arctic Terns now, Alex.

I've never seen OS support for these modes so far. Whether they're supported in the firmware, I don't know.
