General CPU Discussion / CPU Power 9 8 core piĆ¹ veloci e prestanti
« on: November 24, 2020, 01:01:36 pm »
Greetings to the whole Power community, today I chatted with Raptor and asked them if it was possible to have a different CPU from those sold by them up to now. Specifically, it is the 02CY977 DD2.2 model or equivalent DD2.3 or 02WP000 which always have 8 cores but have a 3.8 GHZ base frequency and can be overclocked to 4.1 GHZ consuming 190 W. They replied that the minimum order is 30 pieces and I was wondering if there are people like me interested in this CPU so I can collect 30 orders and do a small upgrade with this model. Are we interested? In my opinion it would have been better to market this and not the current DD.2.3 which is the same as the previous one and also the performances are only slightly higher, while I think these have a slightly higher performance difference and consequently in my opinion they are more interesting. We have 2 models of 4 cores and 2 models of 8 cores that are almost the same, like almost doubles and instead with these models we would think something a little different and more performing ... Let us know if we are interested in this model and let's talk to Raptor in that case ...

Applications and Porting / Video Encoding
« on: November 08, 2020, 03:12:39 pm »
Hi everyone, for some time I have been testing high definition video on my Power system and I realized that I cannot go beyond the 1440P. From what I know, unfortunately on Power the video decoding is not optimized to the best and consequently, the performance is not what you can get on an X86 or ARM system. Whatever application you use or whatever browser you use, in the end you can't get regular and fluid 4K content unfortunately but only in 2K. My question at this point arises spontaneously, will we ever manage to have one day, the optimization we need to finally have a video decoding worthy of the name? It is not known ...

GPU Compute / Accelerators / Current support distributions for Navi AMD
« on: September 07, 2020, 04:05:17 am »
Hello everyone, I wanted to know if to date, as well Fedora, if there is some other distribution of Linux for our architecture, which has the drivers to normal operation GPUs AMD series  Navi 10/14. Someone has information about? Thanks

Applications and Porting / Raspberry Pie
« on: August 19, 2020, 04:17:55 am »
Hello everyone Open Power community, in these days I came across the RaspBerry Pie world by chance and I got some research on how it works. I saw that being based on Linux, the whole emulator system and the whole retro pie application, can be easily installed even on X86 based computers, (the original Raspberry version is on ARM). I wonder now, there is no version of Power for us today, right? As usual, it takes someone who takes the code and brings it to our system ... Do you have any more news?
Thank you

Firmware / CPU Firmware
« on: June 22, 2020, 03:34:18 pm »
Hello, all power community, I had a question for everyone in this fine community that I understand you're all pretty much all but me... As we all know, one of the advantages of Power is that it gives us the power to rewrite, for example, the CPU firmware to our liking. I wonder at this point, what skills are needed to do it and what real advantages does the power bring? I'll give you guys the word if you want...
Thank you

Applications and Porting / Red Dead Redemption 2 For Linux
« on: June 21, 2020, 03:28:08 am »
Hi guys from Power comunity, I just read that apparently, Rockstar Games, is working not only on a Windows version of this crazy game, but also on a Linux version and that even the Linux version is even more performing than its Windows counterpart. Now I wonder, in your opinion, will the sources be made available to develop it for Power as well? For us it would be a great blow because that game is impressive technically and already on Playstation 4. despite the limitations of a hardware of 7 years ago now on balance, has shown really good things. Today with the graphics cards we have at our disposal, I think it could be really great and we would make a quantum leap as a really great game software... What do the experienced programmers among you who already compile games with the sources say about it? Enlighten us... :-)

Operating Systems and Porting / Screen Saver disappeared
« on: April 19, 2020, 04:53:18 am »
Friends of Power good morning, it will seem trivial I know but since I use the dedicated graphics card, it seems that the screen saver has disappeared and I could not find it anymore. I'm sending you the picture of the error that I get every time I open the Screen Saver application, let's see if we need to change something to recover the screen savers that are present by default on Linux...
Thanks

General Discussion / RME HDSPe AIO
« on: April 11, 2020, 11:09:26 am »
Friends of the Power community, hello to all and happy Easter 2020 to all, even if in this good period unfortunately there is really little but patience, strength and courage.

As you can see from the title of the new discussion, I'm here to tell you about my new and last purchase for my nice Power system.
As you know, the very good Sound Blaster AE-9 that I got at the beginning, when I assembled what has become my Power computer, is not currently supported and so I can't use it. The fact is that I also wanted the dedicated sound card because I'm a fan of music, sound of my own and I love high quality and audio in particular, also I'm one who buys music whenever possible, in high definition formats that is Bluray audio and Super Audio CD, as well as some audio DVD if you can still find it.
So after some research I got interested in the RME AHSPe AIO which was the only one of the sound cards supported by Linux, to be in my opinion up to what I wanted and not to regret the AE-9. At first I wasn't sure if it worked completely and wiki didn't give me all the information I needed and so I probed the ground until I managed to find a forum where a guy had bought and tested this sound card for a long time. So I signed up and got everything explained and finally ordered it and luckily it arrived on time. I'll put a picture of the card just so you can get a general idea of what it looks like. So compared to the AE-9, which currently represents I think the reference point for quality sound cards on computers, this one has no separate power supply. So it's powered from the motherboard and probably in an absolute sense it's better to have separate power supply for minor disturbances, caused by other components like the graphics card and that can be detected. Another thing that jumps out at you is that the RME has two connectors to which dedicated cable assemblies are connected for the various input and output connections. This allows the RME to have more inputs and outputs than the AE-9, including the balanced ones that are not available to everyone and that the AE-9 does not have, but on the other hand these adapters are a bit cumbersome and can have some more dispersion than the direct ones connected to the card. An added value of the RME compared to the AE-9 in my opinion is for sure the made in Germany, from my friend MPC yes, this card is made in Europe and now I have the pleasure to say that my Power computer is mostly made in the West which today, especially in the world of consumer electronics is almost impossible! Reading a review of this RME, as a merit, they also wrote the made in Germany, so we agree that it's really an added value of this sound card and that RME is a beautiful reality just like Raptor, not a giant that eats only profits but a small company of people who do their job for passion first and this is fantastic. The components it is made of, you can immediately see that it is of high quality, there are 2 BB DACs, 1 Analog Device DAC, excellent analog section, in short you can see the quality of the board in the round. Of course the AE-9 boasts some of the most 'emblazoned components such as the ESS Sabre 9038 DAC, which is able to go up to a sampling rate of 384 KHZ with 32-bit digital signal processing while the RME comes to a very good 24-bit/192 KHZ. On the AE-9 you can change the operational amplifiers, making the board even more performing, but in general we can say that for Linux and Power so, in my opinion, better than the RME is difficult to find at the moment. Speaking about listening impressions so far,
I can say that the difference with the integrated audio of the Blackbird is obviously heard, although I must say that the integrated audio of our beautiful motherboard always behaves well, but certainly for obvious reasons the dedicated card, especially if it is of quality as it is, it makes its superiority felt and it is also fair seeing how much it costs. The audio becomes more present, rich in detail, more dynamic and full-bodied, moreover, various possibilities open up in the professional audio field, with a whole series of operations that cannot be done with the integrated audio. Another differnza then that there is with Creative is precisely the approach that RME has with this sound card and with its products of this type, in fact this AIO, as well as the sound card previous to her, gives the possibility to expand the outputs and entrances in a very professional and qualitative way. In fact, there is the possibility of connecting 2 further boards with 4 other inputs and 4 outputs, dedicated, independent and with their own analog and DAC section. If on the one hand the costs are obviously higher, on the other you understand very well the type of product, a product born for professional studios and for making and listening to high quality audio, therefore a decidedly more professional and dedicated approach to a more professional market than Creative. The AIO card has a fairly important cost, its cost is 579 Euros (I speak in Euros of course but you can do the quick conversion into dollars) and if you want an I / O expansion card it takes another 200 Euros. I think next month I will buy the expansion with 4 additional outputs, so that I can connect some other pair of speakers and make a more enveloping audio. As regards the installation and configuration, just mounted, the card is immediately recognized by Linux, unlike obviously the AE-9 which has no support and therefore is not even detected and when it does it cannot be started due to lack of drivers. We therefore have immediate recognition because I have read that for some time now there are ALSA drivers installed by default in the Kernel and therefore these cards are fully supported. Having said that, however, to make it work, you need to install the ALSA-TOOS-GUI package which is now at version 1.2.2.1 and which is found without problems on the net. Once that is installed, a series of executables appear with mixer as an icon and when you open ALSAMIXER from the terminal, it allows you to act on the various channels, which before installing this package does not make you do. Except that really only HDSEMixer is working, which opens regularly and allows you to make various adjustments in detail. The remaining executables don't work I don't know why and the executable that has the hammer as its icon, what is called HDSPconf, does not open, I don't know why maybe there are some bugs that have not been resolved yet and therefore it doesn't work . In any case, this does not affect the functionality of the card at all, which is fine and can be managed both by the ALSAMixer and by HDSPeMixer. I'll post the photo of what this mixer looks like. Ultimately I can say I am very satisfied with my Power System, I lacked the completion of the ideal system and now with this card there is and I am very happy with it. I know that today only some of us are dedicated to audio on the computer because integrated audio is now working well and for many it is going so well that the sound card market has contracted a lot in recent years. I also know that in this Power community, maybe I'm the only one who has purchased the dedicated sound card and who loves this section, but I know that it can be useful to everyone in general to have further information on this section and in fact Raptor he asked to report all the impressions and all the information I had once I installed and tested the card.

Blackbird / Menu and options of PetitBoot
« on: March 30, 2020, 04:02:10 pm »
Hi guys, I asked Raptor why our Petitboot after starting BMC on Power, does not have the menu with all those options and information that the motherboards of X86 systems have, for example CPU type, speed, temperature, number of fans installed and their speed in real time, installed memory, speed of the same etc ... They sent me this link but I don't know how to use it and why even if I understand that my answer lies in this link. Can any of you explain to me more specifically this thing? Thanks

Operating Systems and Porting / New Ubuntu 20.04
« on: March 23, 2020, 07:00:37 am »
Power Community good morning, in April as we all know, both Ubuntu 20.04 and Fedora 32 will come out, COVID-19 emergency obviously allowing. About Ubuntu 20.04, I was asking myself a question or, what possibility will there be of using the AMD Radeon 5700 graphics cards that we currently use with Fedora with modified Kernel? I know I will use version 5.4 of the Kernel but I don't know what kind of support there will be for graphics cards, does anyone already know how it will work on Ubuntu?

Another thing that I did not understand is why they use 5.4 kernels when version 5.7 is already being developed and with 5.6 that if I have not misunderstood it is already working ...

Thank you

Operating Systems and Porting / Possibility to install Amiga OS 4
« on: March 08, 2020, 04:01:31 am »
Good morning to all the Power community, in this discussion I would like to introduce the Amiga question that I haven't seen much to deal with for now but which in my opinion deserves being AmigaOS, an operating system written completely for Power processors. Do any of you know a way to be able to install Amiga OS 4 on our systems? If I remember correctly, I read that they put a sort of block for which only with an Amiga XE machine you can start the installation and run the software. Anyone know more about this story?

General Discussion / The pride of being Power!
« on: March 07, 2020, 04:19:46 am »
Friends of Power comunity, I decided to open the first general discussion on our beloved architecture because this damned Corona Virus COVID-19 is putting a strain on the whole world but it is precisely for this reason that something that concerns us closely, is being setting in motion to resolve the situation. I speak obviously of Summit that for a few days now, it begins to peep out not only in the specific articles of technology and computers where it usually is but rather in the news pages of every day and for everyone. I shared these articles both here and on Facebook as well, just to pay homage and support the work that the United States Energy is doing and to praise our beautiful architecture and our legendary Power 9 because maybe thanks to him there will be a great contribution to defeating COVID-19! Let's say it is a great satisfaction and a pinch of pride for me to see this thing, as a sort of revenge on all those who continue to think that in the world there is only X86 and only with that you can do everything ...! So I'd say Summit come on, we're with you!

Firmware / New firmware V2.00 BMC procedure
« on: February 22, 2020, 08:59:28 am »
Guys, I'm not finding discussions aimed at the new BMC update firmware, more generally, in my opinion there is no real complete guide to updating, perhaps because the news is scattered among the old guides and you go to take parts of them. In any case I would like if it were possible, to group everything in one guide because there are people like me who have never entered yet via external computer, inside the Blackbird and therefore I still cannot do anything to update the firmware. Also it seems that someone is encountering critical issues so before starting any operation, I would like to be sure of both the exact procedure and the possibility of doing it or waiting ...

General Discussion / Printers and management drivers
« on: February 08, 2020, 04:51:18 am »
Good morning everyone, a topic that I still believe has not been covered on our forum is the issue of printers. Obviously, here too we have the usual problem that the various printer manufacturers do not produce Power drivers to manage their printers. How do you move in the Power community when it comes to connecting and managing a printer?

Operating Systems and Porting / System cleaning
« on: February 02, 2020, 04:06:08 am »
Hello to the whole forum, after a period of use, I think we all have the classic problem of filling the "root file" on Linux and the consequent appearance of the famous message that this file must be freed. What do you recommend to do it best? I have read some guides on the internet but they have not helped me much, apart from the classic cleaning of the browser cache I do not know how to proceed to do the cleaning that the system would like ... Obviously I am not referring only to the root file but in general to the whole system, what should be done to clean everything obviously ... I also tried the "street sweeper" application but it doesn't work ...
