General CPU Discussion / Re: CPU Power 9 8 core più veloci e prestanti
« on: November 25, 2020, 01:05:44 am »
Hi Merklot, nice to see you again on the forum, yes I realize that support is needed but for that I think Raptor can help us do everything, the main problem I think is to collect the minimum 30 memberships we need to be able to buy this CPU.  In any case, thank you for your contribution, always very precious!

hi Classic, no because I think the price depends on the calculation that Raptor should make once the 30 units have been purchased.  At the moment they don't even know how much it would cost.  Well I would take the 2.3 because it is higher than the 2.2, if we manage to collect at least 30 subscriptions, we have the possibility to buy this beautiful CPU ... Come on guys, we support Power and Raptor more and more and we carry on the eco system, to  apparently Axon AIO is unfortunately not foreseen at the moment so we have to find an existing alternative ...

General CPU Discussion / CPU Power 9 8 core più veloci e prestanti
« on: November 24, 2020, 01:01:36 pm »
Greetings to the whole Power community, today I chatted with Raptor and asked them if it was possible to have a different CPU from those sold by them up to now. Specifically, it is the 02CY977 DD2.2 model or equivalent DD2.3 or 02WP000 which always have 8 cores but have a 3.8 GHZ base frequency and can be overclocked to 4.1 GHZ consuming 190 W. They replied that the minimum order is 30 pieces and I was wondering if there are people like me interested in this CPU so I can collect 30 orders and do a small upgrade with this model. Are we interested? In my opinion it would have been better to market this and not the current DD.2.3 which is the same as the previous one and also the performances are only slightly higher, while I think these have a slightly higher performance difference and consequently in my opinion they are more interesting. We have 2 models of 4 cores and 2 models of 8 cores that are almost the same, like almost doubles and instead with these models we would think something a little different and more performing ... Let us know if we are interested in this model and let's talk to Raptor in that case ...

Pocock excuse me, but if I wanted to use the GPU also on programs like VLC or others, then don't use vaapi acceleration only on browsers like Chromium or Firefox but use vaapi or similar to be able to use 4k videos on VLC or similar. Do you think it can be done? If so, how?
Thanks

General CPU Discussion / Re: IBM POWER9+ ?
« on: November 19, 2020, 07:07:36 am »
We all knew about a Power 9 Axon AIO given out for the end of the year ... The production process always had to be the 14 IBM owner made by GF ... I'd like to understand if they have changed these plans or if there is still a possibility that it will come out  ... On the other hand Power 10 is still far away and the whole server line would need a general update I think ...

Ah well, so we'll have that as Kernel great news. Kernel 5.10 should now have internal support for these GPUs I hope. I just hope there are no bugs on that as well otherwise it wouldn't make sense ...

Pocock do you think there will be full support for Navi 10 in the next Debian 11?  Do you know anything about it?  What kind of Kernel will it use?

I would be very happy, I am in the extreme south, Sicily to be exact, I don't know how you get it but in case you will let me know if it is possible. In any case, I still want to see the solution you sent first, let's see if I can understand more about how to do with the command ...

hi pocock, I'm in Italy, I don't know if I can interact with that channel that I think is American ... I think I can try in any case but I have to understand how to connect via Irc, I haven't used it for many years so I don't know if I can now use it and then find the right server to connect to ...

Hello all friends of Power, I tried a few operations but unfortunately I did not get the desired results. In the meantime I tried to run that command according to a guide I read on Google, but apparently it does not exist for Power as it tells me no match. So I followed another guide where it told me to install some file of which 2 I already had and 1 I didn't, and then to enable this time on Firefox, some options to activate this GPU acceleration but in the end it didn't work anyway. The only doubt I have is that he asks me Wayland as a graphic designer while I have always had and used Xorg. I wonder if that's my problem or there's something else... Do you have any advice about it?
I also tried to do it through VLC but the problem is always the same, it reads in 2K but in 4K it fails, I think because even then it uses the CPU and not the GPU...

Guys I'm reading now what the good MPC7500 recommended to me and I found what he says. In practice, it should be enough for me to run the command "sudo dnf install chromium-libs-media-freeworld" to enable the video acceleration patch on the GPU on Chromium and thus relieve the CPU of this task since the software for Power is not optimized unfortunately for us . I have the RPM Fusion for some time now as they are used to use other programs such as VLC for example that requires them before installing it and since then I have already installed them. I try to do this simple step and see what I get, it seems simpler and more immediate than the other. Thanks always very much to MPC for his excellent reports!

Great, do you think that by doing this you would also be able to find this damn bug that has been haunting us for months now?
