Operating Systems and Porting / Re: New Kernel 5.16 and new problem
« on: April 21, 2022, 01:46:23 pm »
Hi MatGraf, unfortunately, having never patched the kernel, I'm not practical and I don't understand where to apply this patch exactly. I read in this guide on the net, which must be applied in the path of / usr / src but in the downloaded kernel there is only the usr directory, the src is not there and I don't understand where to apply this patch. That path is present in the root system directory, that is the one that is identified with the symbol / but in the directory of the Kernel just downloaded I can't find this path ... Can you tell me better how to do it kindly? So I too start learning how to patch kernels ... Thanks

Well then in theory maybe already in the next Kernel 5.17.4, there could be the correction without the need to insert it manually ...

Excuse me but when you make a correction, shouldn't you tell the Kernel developers, warning them that a correction must be made regarding that architecture and therefore to make the Kernel work, you must make a correction for everyone?

So you think it's AMD's fault that these cards still don't go to Power? I thought that since AMD's drivers are always open source, then the Power developers came up with the equivalents for our architecture. At the time of my 5700 I remember that when the first drivers for Linux were published, Raptor in the person of Tim Pearson, created a Patch to insert nice Kernel and from that moment on this card started to work also on Power. Then as time passed, everything was integrated into the official kernels and the 5700 as well as the 5500 Navi 14 ran perfectly on Power. Now I don't know if even in this case, a Patch would be needed to make these cards work at first, or in this case the problems are other too ... You should ask whoever does this work on AMD GPU drivers. ..

Great Matgraf, great job, how can we take advantage of the correction now? Should we simply wait for the Linux Kernel team to fix it and then regularly download the tarball from the linux-archive site or do we need to do something else? Thanks

Guys apparently with the Kernel we have stopped, no news yet on the correction of the problem on Power of the new Kernel 5.16 and 5.17 and the 5.18 is coming as well ...

Hi Daniel, then you are there you have not disappeared into thin air hahaha.  In any case, I had also asked me some time ago about the situation of these cards and the TLE friend said that the drivers are not yet working, I don't know if anything has changed now but unfortunately I have not read about anyone who uses these cards on Power. and therefore I think there is no news about it ... The thing is strange because now we are almost 2 years after launch if I remember correctly and it is serious that they cannot be used yet ...

But none of you made this login to fill out Unreal Tournament 4?  It seems strange to me, however, that only for a simple access which among other things is reported regularly, the friend TLE was unable to compile the game ... Maybe there is more ...

Raptor says Unrial Tournament 4 works fine too, only when TLE tried to compile it, it failed and says it lacks documentation. Nobody can do this to bring this game to our Power9 systems? On you tube you see a demo that runs on Power 8, so if it runs on that, I wonder why we haven't run it on Power9 yet ... A bit paradoxical I would say ...

Yes, in fact, strange Xlinder that you did not know about this fix because it is already some time that we talked in the forum, that the problem of the AMD gpu related to the size of the pages, has been solved with the Kernel 5.11.12. They made a fix in the drivers and from that moment the 64K pages started working again and in fact now I am using the 5.15.30 Kernel on Debian with 64K pages and not 4K.

Operating Systems and Porting / Re: [NEWS] Debian 11 is out

Borley, I tried your procedure, practically the same as the one done with the command: make -j 32 KDEB_PKGVERSION = 1.-maury.ppc64le deb-pkg and the error that gives me at the end is always the same on the Kernels with long support of the 5.15.X series If I try to compile the recent ones then it works but unfortunately the recent kernels as we know do not work on Power, like 5.17.X and therefore I cannot use this procedure yet. The error here is this too: make [2]: *** [debian / rules: 7: build-arch] Error 2
dpkg-buildpackage: Error: debian / rules binary subprocess returned exit status 2
make [1]: *** [scripts / Makefile.package: 83: bindeb-pkg] Error 2
make: *** [Makefile: 1576: bindeb-pkg] Error 2

I don't understand why these 5.15 Kernels make this error, 5.15.2 does it, 5.15.30 does it and also the current 5.15.33. Only if you use the universal procedure like the one I've always used and which uses Xlinder, then it doesn't give you compiler errors but I don't know how to make the system recognize it in that case. I'm waiting for them to fix the new Kernel bug so I can use that ...

Operating Systems and Porting / Re: [NEWS] Debian 11 is out

Hi Xlinder, I also do like you and I use that procedure that they say is the universal one, only that way the system does not recognize you the fully installed kernel and when you have to remove it to put a new one, you have to remove file by file in the boot folder and when you run the grep command to find out how many kernels you have installed, the one you made is not there since you have not installed .deb packages. and you can't even do the classic purge command to remove that kernel because it tells you that kernel isn't installed on your system. So the system eventually does not recognize as installed, a kernel with that procedure even if it regularly makes you use it obvious. I would like to understand if it is possible to make the system recognize a kernel installed with this universal procedure as you do ...

Hi Borley, yes you are right, the installation part with the dpkg -i command is missing but the universal procedure does not bring you anything on how to do after the make install that's why I have never deepened further. Now I have found a procedure that reports the command: sudo make -j 32 KDEB_PKGVERSION = 1.-maury.ppc64le deb-pkg
I call my custom kernel as you understand of course, if I do this then he creates the .deb packages which can then be installed with the dpkg command, only I noticed that if I do this command, I try to compile the 5.15 kernel. X, it gives me an error towards the end of the compilation while if I try to compile a more recent version like 5.17, then the compilation procedure is successful and I honestly don't understand why. If I use the procedure that I have always done, that is the universal one I mentioned above, then the compilation takes place without problems even on version 5.15.X but as usual I have the problem that I do not have the .deb files to perform the actual installation. If I understood how to get the .deb files from the universal procedure, I would continue to use that without any problems ... I would like to understand well how to do after the make install, how to get the .deb files, I need the advice of a Debian expert like Daniel Pocock or Xlinder or Linux experts that there are many in here :-)

My personal opinion is that these old machines are now obsolete and it no longer makes sense to keep them alive given the growing limits.  On the contrary, the time has come to invest in Raptor machines that represent Power's future in the home environment.  They are and have made a great effort to bring Power back to our homes, I was no longer hoping to revise my favorite architecture, to return to the homes of all of us!  So with all due respect to the old machines, that's it, it's time to evolve and change, support Raptor and carry on the whole oper Power project!
