Talos II / Re: OpenBMC password
« on: April 09, 2022, 05:12:59 pm »
As far as I know, a lost or forgotten BMC password basically requires reflashing the BMC chip. But if you're already logged into the BMC, changing it should be as simple as running
Code: [Select]
passwdand very carefully entering the new passphrase, three times. I have discovered (through my own painful experience :P) that the separate password for the boot menu (Petitboot) can more easily be reset.

I have been burned by running make as root user in the past, so I always avoid running make with sudo when possible. My understanding of the process so far:
  • apt install dpkg-dev flex bison rsync libssl-dev (if not already installed)
  • mkdir build-directory && cd build-directory
  • apt source linux-image-X.XX.X-XX-powerpc64le
  • make oldconfig (to copy kernel config from existing entries)
  • Edit .config and:

CONFIG_LOCALVERSION=""  (<-- append custom kernel name in "")
  • Make whichever changes you need to the kernel/modules
  • make bindeb-pkg
    Then finally:
  • sudo dpkg -i linux-image-X.XX.X_X.XX.X-1_ppc64el.deb

User Zone / Calling for gaming experiences
« on: April 09, 2022, 04:52:48 pm »
If you have gotten any games up and running on your Power9 systems, please share anything about the experience here. I have been slowly compiling compatibility for various works and so far we have already evaluated: see wiki

Still need to check:

Evolution RTS
XEMU
Flare
Speed Dreams
OpenTomb
OpenMW
Colobot
Berusky
Pioneer
The Dark Mod
MegaGlest
UFO:AI
Terminal Overload
Yo Frankie!
Unvanquished
Red Eclipse 2
Rigs of Rods
Yorg
Oolite
Ryzom (Build resources for anyone interested. I have tried and failed several times so I might be in over my head on this one. But it would be really good to have as it is an active commercial title.)
PPSSPP

Really, anything from Libre Game Wiki or Open Source Game Clones. Although I have been biasing my tests toward games that have a general sense of visual polish and professionalism. I feel this information would be good to have for fence sitters deciding whether or not to go for an open power system.

Testing is slow going, since I don't yet have my second board and my only one is currently my production environment that I rely on for work and necessities.

General OpenPOWER Discussion / Story Time
« on: April 09, 2022, 04:25:43 pm »
Back sometime in 2015-2016 I became interested in Coreboot'd boards shortly after learning of Intel ME/AMD PSP from some heavy lifters in the free & open source community. The stuff for sale at the time were largely ASUS serverboards that had Coreboot ported. But they had been E-ATX or other eccentricities that made them difficult to build around. And the smaller boards were mostly either much older, poorly/partially supported or made concessions in allowing nonfree blobs to run.

That year I identified a board that followed standard ATX, supported big multicore CPUs and was more widely available: the SuperMicro H8SGL-F. Not a hard sell at the time only being 4-5 years old. I emailed Raptor Engineering, identified from the ASUS firmware ports, and inquired about porting the H8SGL-F. They quoted about 10,000 USD to handle such a job, which, at least at the time, I most certainly did not have the money for.

Not too long after, crowdfunding was opened for the Talos Power8 Secure Workstation. I followed the project through its development, crowdfunding failure, and eventual revival with Power9. And here I am today with an Open Power workstation humming away at the desk. Funny how things work.

Those old ASUS boards are still sold through some vendors but I'm glad they are no longer the only options for a strong, free workstation. I did end up buying some H8SGL boards anyway while awaiting Raptor's work, and I've got to say they weren't terrible. They, along with their Bulldozer/Piledriver chips, could be had for dirt cheap, supported ECC memory, IOMMU, did not contain embedded rootkit circuitry and the BMC could be disabled both in BIOS and via physical jumper. In doing so, reaching much of the way to decent design only without having free firmware.

I had a 32 bit Powerbook for a while but when Debian dropped ppc support in Jessie, it just wasn't worth it to try to continue using it. Even as a hobbyist piece. I would at least look to move to something newer, if not entirely to a Raptor board, as Maury says.

You haven't updated since posting this and I know I'm totally necro'ing the thread but I really like your work. Would you consider sharing pictures of this to the user gallery?

Mod Zone / Re: is Talos II overclocking the fan?
« on: April 08, 2022, 07:05:28 pm »
Some of these fans include a resistor in-line plug for a lazy man's quiet operation mode. If it's one of those, would that impact the PWM measurement?

"Let's boost this beast up"  ;D I think I know what you meant, but does anybody remember those old turbo buttons that really old builds sometimes had? It might be worth installing a faux turbo button if only for nostalgia's sake.

Spring 2022 update:

obs-studio is now available for ppc64le (Debian repository) - tested and working.

Additional improvements a Blackbird redesign could use:

Better hardware clock setting. Cannot interact via Linux, hwclock --set... must currently be done through BMC. I may need to check out fake-hwclock for now.

For simple jobs, can you get away with ffmpeg for now?

Code: [Select]
ffmpeg -i ./BDMV/STREAM/00000.m2ts transcoded.mkv

Operating Systems and Porting / Re: [NEWS] Debian 11 is out

make install places everything in the filepaths directly, so dpkg never sees it. You probably want to build into .deb packages instead, starting from apt source linux-image-X.XX.X-XX-powerpc64le. But don't ask me details, I'm really new to the procedure myself.

Operating Systems and Porting / Re: Improvements for AST2600

Would Kestral replace AST as graphics adapter? Or does that remain board-side?

I agree that the price wont go down as when it was in 2019

Yes, I remember when the Blackbird announcement had it at about 700 USD. Good thing Raptor CS accept BTC. The prices in fiat only go up.

75
still waiting untill price goes normal again

What is the threshold for "normal"? I don't think that Talos/Blackbird prices will ever decline back down to 2019 levels.

the price of the equipment increased by 6.5% in a month :(

Yes, this sucks! We are currently seeing the biggest inflation rates in decades, worldwide. Small manufacturers are not only the first to feel this, but also the first to go down if they do not act in time. Broken supply chains are the next problem that play into this. Even without covid and a full on war going on, the inflation would've been around 4% p.a. (instead of the ~8% we can except right now). For some categories, e.g. energy, inflation is expected to be more than 30% in 2022. Right now, things are looking really bleak, but we all have to accept the new reality and that it won't be over anytime soon and that waiting for prices to improve could be a bad decision: it's been a while since there's been deflation

That's what you get for hijacking a thread; another rant  :D

I really only want to talk tech and Power when I come here, but on inflation I think what we are seeing was inevitable ever since so much new USD was minted in 2020. As that funnels down into the active economy we begin to see the dollar value decline. Conflict and supply crisis arrived in perfect timing for bureaucrats to blame for inflation.

vikings.thum is spot on here.

Something to think about: why is Intel/AMD hardware pricing staying stable, in a high inflation environment...at the same time Pluton and other "final lockdown" strategies are starting to be enforced?

The consumer is going to pay one way or another for inflation, whether it's in the form of increased purchase price or reduced functionality / increased data extraction and sale.  Obviously we can only pass cost on through the former means, whereas our signed binary requiring competitors have all options on the table.  ;)

If you (and others) want to truly own computing hardware in the future, this is the time to be voting with your wallet.  Once owner controlled computing is gone, it will not come back for many generations if at all.

Could it just be industry size and inertia providing them padding? Or if one wants to put a tinfoil hat on, is there a vested interest in seeing through an agenda of destroying user control in all consumer electronics? It would be very interesting to do a deep dive into Intel/AMD connections to certain special groups or funding.
