Operating Systems and Porting / Re: [NEWS] Debian
« on: December 25, 2020, 08:29:39 am »
guys then this Debian is a nightmare for me. Not only does it work terrible after installation, it jerks and is unusable but it doesn't even let me log in as root. When I try to authenticate with SU and after entering the password, it tells me that the authentication has failed and it always does even if I try to change the password. For me this Debian is totally unusable ...

Xlinder sorry, but I have to do the ismod command after installing the 5.9.6 kernel right? I don't think that at the moment with 4.19 there can be support for recent AMD GPUs like my Navi 10 ... The problem is that at the moment it jerks and I don't know if I can make it go well, let's see if I have to do everything as a server and so I should exit with ctrl, alt, F2 to return to server mode and from there type ismod and possibly also install the kernel or I can do it from desktop ...

Hi Pocock, thanks for reporting, I'll do as you tell me.  The thing I am seeing for now is that for me Debian runs very badly at the moment, it jerks ... Obviously at the moment I have to use it with Blackbird video output but the resolution is still low so I don't know if it depends on the graphics server or  other...

done well but with the key it does not start the installation from petit boot, whether I copy the iso image directly as I download it, or if I put the ISO file through a procedure with Shell.  Eventually I managed to install it by putting both.  With the DVD I started the installation and with the stick I did the installation once I entered ... I honestly don't understand this strange behavior of Debian.  Now I am installing gnome and the optical drive works fine ... Anyway, apart from these oddities, do you or someone else know by chance where to download the 5.9.6 kernel for Debian Power?  Thanks

Hi Xlinder, yes I understand that from the operating system it works smoothly, I'm talking about when you have to install Debian from the beginning, when you copy to the optical disc the ISO image downloaded from the official Debian website and start the installation process. At a certain point, after choosing the language and the keyboard type, the installer tells me that it doesn't see the optical disc drive and I don't understand why... Everyone sees it in a direct way and I don't understand why the Debian installer is the only one who doesn't see it...

guys good morning, sorry but why does Debian not recognize the optical disc player that the other distributions recognize automatically immediately?  I am obviously talking about our Power version because in the X86 version this problem does not exist ... Even Ubuntu that derives from Debian does not have this problem ... What should be done to make it recognize it, is there any driver or is there any procedure to be performed?  Thanks

Blackbird / Re: [amdgpu] [Fiji] Fedora 32 Linux kernel 5.7.x crashes

I understand, of course you are not giving us good news on the Fedora front at this point, the main problem is that we have tried to talk to all the main supporters, from the Fedora team to Raptor but nobody can give us a solution ... Honestly I find  this absolutely amazing thing ... That said, this Kernel you say needs to be installed or is it on the current 10.6 version of Debian?  I would like to try installing 10.6 and see how it behaves with Navi 10 ...

Hi Pocock, so do you think this damn bug that has plagued this Kernel with Navi for months will finally be fixed? Another question, you who are Debian experts, do you think that with Debian 11 there will be full support and just put the classic Xorg setting to enable Navi 10 and it will work on Debian natively too?

The new Quadro RTX 6000 with Ampere architecture has just come out, what I can't understand from the site is the support they give to the Power architecture. The site shows that there are drivers only for the Tesla series but then if you look in the list, the RTX 6000 and 8000 also come out under Tesla which instead should be part of the Quadro series. So I can't figure out if those Power drivers are suitable for running the Quadro series which is a little less expensive than the Tesla series ...

Hi TLE, I also tweeted to Raptor and they told me that there is still no solution, all this is incredible anyway, there is a bug that afflicts these GPUs and it is still not fixed after months and months ...  I understand what's so complicated that then everything worked fine, how they could suddenly spoil everything is a mystery ... Navi 10 has been around for more than 1 year now and the price has also dropped ... Incredible ...

Applications and Porting / Re: Video Encoding

Guys from what I'm understanding, the real problem that I personally have is with the VP9 format of Youtube, with that if I put 4K it jerks or freezes. If I use instead formats like H264 on applications like VLC or QMPlay2, then I can see 4K quite well and without problems. I think the real problem is YouTube VP9... I don't know if you can see 4K as well in a smooth way...

General CPU Discussion / Re: CPU Power 9 8 core più veloci e prestanti
« on: November 26, 2020, 06:54:04 am »
However, I can say that as a rule, the components that are mainly involved in supporting the power supply part of any electronic and electronic device cannot be sized to withstand the same user value.  So I believe Blackbird has components that should have a tolerance greater than the 160W limit which is the maximum power output of the Power 9 - 8 core we currently use.  It must have a higher minimum tolerance and I think at least those 200W must handle them without problems.  Then I don't know specifically of course, only Raptor can know, but as a rule it works like this for everyone ...

About this I have to ask Raptor because I also have Blackbird and obviously I could not mount myself if in fact it is so ... But in any case I do not think that the minimum number is reached in any case but I have to ask them in any case. ..

Hi Merklot, nice to see you again on the forum, yes I realize that support is needed but for that I think Raptor can help us do everything, the main problem I think is to collect the minimum 30 memberships we need to be able to buy this CPU.  In any case, thank you for your contribution, always very precious!

hi Classic, no because I think the price depends on the calculation that Raptor should make once the 30 units have been purchased.  At the moment they don't even know how much it would cost.  Well I would take the 2.3 because it is higher than the 2.2, if we manage to collect at least 30 subscriptions, we have the possibility to buy this beautiful CPU ... Come on guys, we support Power and Raptor more and more and we carry on the eco system, to  apparently Axon AIO is unfortunately not foreseen at the moment so we have to find an existing alternative ...
