Applications and Porting / [GAME] Super Mario 64 native Linux port
« on: September 29, 2020, 09:41:55 am »
It's happened! Crazy hacker has managed to reverse engineered the N64 game! It was then ported to many platforms including Linux (OpenGL backend).

A bit of tweak in the Makefile and the game can be compiled successfully for PPC64LE

Yup, after 3 years the PPC64LE RPM for SSR is finally included in the RPMFusion repo

Applications and Porting / [GAMES] Unvanquished is now fully open-sourced
« on: September 18, 2020, 09:40:34 pm »
Good news, the Unvaquished game is now open sourced

URL: https://github.com/Unvanquished/Unvanquished

It does not support PPC64 nor PPC64LE yet but I don't it would be too much work to get it ported.

I am more than happy to join anyone who want to start the PPC64LE port effort.

Today at OpenPOWER Summit 2020, IBM announced it is contributing two key technologies to the OpenPOWER community:

 * A2O POWER processor core, an out-of-order follow-up to the A2I core, and associated FPGA environment
 * Open Cognitive Environment (Open-CE), based on IBM’s PowerAI to enable improved consumability of AI and deep learning frameworks

Blackbird / What is the PWR I2C header?
« on: August 30, 2020, 03:40:54 am »
There is a 5 pin header labelled as PWR I2C on the motherboard but there is no mentioning what it is about in the manual doc. Could someone please shed some light on that for me? Many thanks in advance

Blackbird / [amdgpu] [Fiji] Fedora 32 Linux kernel 5.7.x crashes
« on: August 27, 2020, 11:50:42 pm »
Wondering if anyone has bumped into the issue with amdgpu crashing the kernel upon booting up? I am trying to isolate if this issue occurs to all radeon gpu or not.... or could it be related to something else.

I've reported the issue at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1855976 and https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1293

Many thanks in advance

P/S: My card is Radeon R9 Nano and the old kernel 5.6 works correctly.

** UPDATE **

I manage to get the card working by adding `amdgpu.dc=0` to the kernel parameter. Verified with 5.7.0

However yet there is likely another regression with kernel 5.8.x and 5.9.x because the driver crashes instantly upon loading up.

** UPDATE **

Kernel 5.8, 5.9 and 5.11 runs perfectly if the kernel is compiled with 4K pages

** UPDATE **

Kernel 5.10.5 to 5.10.24 runs perfectly with either 64K or 4K pages! So if you are on FC33, you don't have to do anything, it would just work! :D
FYI Fedora 33 skips 5.10.24 to jump straight to 5.11.7. If you are looking for the F33 RPMs for the 5.10.x series, check out my fork at https://github.com/runlevel5/fedora-linux-kernel/releases/tag/5.10.24.f33

** UPDATE **

Kernel 5.11.12 or older (64K pages) still suffers the same issue. Please make sure you use 5.11.12 or newer

Blackbird / [SELL] 2 x 8GB DDR4 ECC stock RAM
« on: July 03, 2020, 02:19:07 am »
I am selling 2 x 8GB PC4-2666V RAM (MTA9ASF1G72PZ-2G6D1QG) which is the stock RAM option by Raptor CS. Used for around 1 month. In pristine condition.

Bought for $474.00 USD, letting them go for $300 USD.

Pick up and inspection is greatly welcome at VIC 3187 Australia. I could postage to other countries at buyer's expense (relatively cheap).

Please drop me a private message if you are interested.

Blackbird / Schematic of the back I/O shield plate
« on: June 09, 2020, 09:34:16 am »
To Raptor CS staff

I would like to ask if where I could find the CAD schematic of the I/O shield of the Blackbird? I am planning to mod the I/O shield to make it perfectly fit my PC case. I could do the hand measurement but I think it won't be as accurate as the original schematic.

Many thanks in advance

General Discussion / AMD Radeon R9 Nano
« on: June 02, 2020, 11:17:06 pm »
I've just replaced my AMD Radeon Vega 64 with the old AMD Radeon R9 Nano. I was considering the Pro WX 7100 card but decided not to go with that because of $.

The R9 Nano is much smaller in form factor and thus produces less heat. R9 Nano does not support H265 decoding. For now I could live with that as long as I could watch YouTube and play 3D open sourced games.

The card is fully compatible with amdgpu driver if the kernel is compiled with 4k pages (CONFIG_PPC_4K_PAGES=y in KConfig). However it is known to have issue with kernel which has 64K pages (CONFIG_PPC_64K_PAGES=y in KConfig), from my finding the 5.6.x, 5.10.x (from 5.10.7), 5.11.x (from 5.11.12) are the only two that have no issue with 64K page size.

Because Fedora Linux ships with 64K page size kernels. It has become common issue that the community is proposing to Fedora team to prepare 4K page size kernel for Fedora 35

I have to disable the onboard VGA and remove the AST GPU Xorg config snippet and let the Linux driver auto-detect my screen settings.

As you could see in the photo, the 8X PCI-E NVMe adapter card is so close to the GPU fan, I don't think it is ideal for heat dissipation.

EDIT: 5.19.4 with 64k or 4k pagesize works fine

UPDATE: 6.0.6 with 64k or 4k pagesize works perfectly

Applications and Porting / [OS] Fedora Silverblue download link
« on: May 26, 2020, 10:02:45 am »
Fedora Silverblue OS supports ppc64le however they did not update their website with download link.

After my PR https://github.com/fedora-silverblue/silverblue-site/pull/83 is merged, you would be able to find the ISO from download page.

Today I learn that my motherboard would refuse to boot up if the J10116 pin touch any metal part of any card on the PCI-E 8X slot. I think J10116 header should be moved to different position to avoid such contact.

Blackbird / How many fans per FAN header?
« on: May 20, 2020, 10:41:48 am »
I am planning to revamp my chassis cooling so I am wondering how many fans could I split from one fan header? There is no mentioning how many amps per fan header in the service manual btw.

Much thanks in advance
