Blackbird not booting - most likely a BMC software problem
« on: October 11, 2026, 05:05:35 am »
Hello again,

I also wrote to support@raptorcs.com and did not get a reply yet. The problem with my Blackbird is as follows. When I press the power button it turns off after a few seconds and only boots sometimes. So I suspect a Heisenbug in the BMC software. I had the same problem one month ago and the reply from
support@raptorcs.com was, that I sould try a different PSU. With this PSU I had no problems for one month. Then on October 8th, my Blackbird stopped working again and using a different PSU did not help. Except that once I was able to IPL the Blackbird again, but it turned off after the IPL was complete at the petitboot prompt. Since I guess that a hardware damage is unlikely I tried to recover my Blackbird using this tutorial: https://vivapowerpc.eu/20260608-1200_How_to_revive_a_mockingbird I deleted all files in /run/initramfs/rw and now I cannot login into the BMC anymore. I had a similar problem with
my Talos II many years ago where an BMC upgrade failed. I was able to recover my machine with a serial cable.

Does a serial cable work here, or no? It should have the same serial port as a T2.

I solved the password problem using the serial cable and now can login again.
But I still get the ERROR PowerControl: Pgood poll timeout thing even if I know the powersuppy is good.
The blackbird IPLed once with that PowerSupply and a tester also shows the PSU is good.
