AMD Radeon RX 6800, 6800 XT and 6900 XT status?

Has anybody tried any of these cards with a recent kernel?

Does the kernel command line option mentioned on the wiki here make any difference?

There is one bug open against kernel 5.10.x, if anybody can try the card with a newer kernel like 5.15.x that would be helpful

Hi Daniel, then you are there you have not disappeared into thin air hahaha.  In any case, I had also asked me some time ago about the situation of these cards and the TLE friend said that the drivers are not yet working, I don't know if anything has changed now but unfortunately I have not read about anyone who uses these cards on Power. and therefore I think there is no news about it ... The thing is strange because now we are almost 2 years after launch if I remember correctly and it is serious that they cannot be used yet ...

The PCIe capabilities of these cards make them a very good match for Talos II at a hardware level so it is sad that nothing happened.

I suspect AMD would tell us that it is easier for us to buy their Ryzen processors and they might not make the effort on these drivers for non-x86 users

IBM, who make both the POWER9 and own Red Hat recently wasted a lot of money on an attempted reverse-domain-name-hijacking.  If they stopped giving the money to lawyers and gave it to real developers then some of us would probably spend the time to fix the GPU drivers.

So you think it's AMD's fault that these cards still don't go to Power? I thought that since AMD's drivers are always open source, then the Power developers came up with the equivalents for our architecture. At the time of my 5700 I remember that when the first drivers for Linux were published, Raptor in the person of Tim Pearson, created a Patch to insert nice Kernel and from that moment on this card started to work also on Power. Then as time passed, everything was integrated into the official kernels and the 5700 as well as the 5500 Navi 14 ran perfectly on Power. Now I don't know if even in this case, a Patch would be needed to make these cards work at first, or in this case the problems are other too ... You should ask whoever does this work on AMD GPU drivers. ..

It's been awhile since I last have a 6900 XT. It did not work for me then. I am too curious if anyone has tried any of those 6xxx series recently because now I am too looking to replace my old R9 Nano (Fiji-based) with something that support H.265 decoding.

TLE friend, unfortunately it seems that even today the 6xxx series is not used and supported on Power.  I do not understand why the community is not taking an interest in this series of graphics cards honestly ... Now they can be found at interesting prices among other things ...

Pretty happy with the perf of 6600 XT card. Good enough for casual gaming and H265 video decoding.

NOTE: only kernel 6.1.0 is known to be working

Any updates in the meantime? 6700 is the same price or cheaper than 6600 XT here, so it would be nice to get that card instead as better value.

Reporting with an RX 6600 that’s been cheerfully hassle-free since kernel 6.1. So long as you hit that criterion, the 6700 should be a delight.
